    Default IP address breakdown

Argh!!! Doing my Comptia Network and Security and I cannot get my head around breaking down an IP address.

The instructor can look at an IP and tell how many networks/hosts etc, just by looking at it - I can't! So, does anyone have a recommended video/cheat sheet/words of wisdom that can help?!

We have been breaking them down to show how net ID, broadcast address and the range in between each, but it was hard to follow!!

It's probably quite similar, but I found messing around with a copy of Solarwinds Advanced Subnet Calculator (free) quickly let me suss out what was going on.

The more you use subnetting the more it sticks in your head. Haven't done any for some time and I can't remember them the way I used to.

I found this helps, but getting it to stick in your head, as above, you need to be on it 24/7. Teaching Comptia N & S will do that to you.

I'm sorry, I can't help you - it's a bit like using the force - you either get it or you don't.

might be no calculator allowed in class - doesn't mean you can't look at them though - the wild packets one has some good help screens with examples that show what's going on that might help you
