In-car camera reviews - 2014 dash cam test

In-car cameras can record valuable footage in the event of a crash. We pick from eight top dash cams

A dashboard camera is fast becoming a must-have for drivers, as it can record valuable footage in the event of a crash. In-car cameras can provide real peace of mind, as the evidence it provides can be relied on in court should the worst happen.
The devices record in a constant loop on to their memory cards, and most use GPS to recognise when you come to a sudden halt – in the event of a crash – so that the all-important footage isn’t overwritten.
Our prices here range from £80 to £250, so what should you look for when buying a camera? We tested eight to find the best all-rounder.
    How we tested them

The ability to capture footage in all conditions is vital, so we tested each camera during the day and at night. We also played back the footage once it had been captured and took into account the computer review process.
The ease of installation was rated, too. Just as crucial is a cam’s ability to detect a crash, so we rated each device’s gravity sensor by simulating an incident with a sudden and sharp braking manoeuvre. The prices quoted are the best we could find from a variety of online retailers at the time of testing.
    Verdict

Transcend's DrivePro 200 left the best impression before price was even taken into account. Yet at £89.99, it’s a snip, and the cheapest of the eight cameras on test. The Roadhawk DC-1 was excellent in practice, and let itself down only in the fact that it doesn’t have a screen. The HP F210 Car Camcorder was slick and easy to use, although a poor response from the G-sensor restricted it to third.
    1. Transcend DrivePro 200
    2. Roadhawk DC-1
    3. HP F210 Car Camcorder

The good ones cost a lot of money but I think I will get one eventually. The good ones can auto record on certain events to catch criminals etc.

I think the Blackvue DR550GW is the best out there at the moment, also comes in a two channel version for rear cam too. Decent info and comparisons here.

I have been thinking of fitting an in-vehicle camera for a while. I will probably end up going for something like this which has twin sd cards and I believe records your speed and also when the brakes are pressed. Will have to add my own separate cameras which I like because I can upgrade the cameras to better quality at a later date. (">

I too have considered these car based CCTV systems. However the problem we these systems is the resolution is piss poor. If you watch videos at these low resolutions, reading things like number plates (even at close distances) is impossible. Much better to go with the HD systems.

The main problem with ALL car dash cams (for me) is that they are "all in one" systems. I want something that does HD but has a separate unit that can be hidden away with a separate tiny camera.

Iirc, he started a thread on this topic, mentioned a cam he got at a reasonable price and was decent enough to put up a sample vid for us.

Definitely sounds like a good idea, unless you film proof it was your fault!

I've been running budget ones front and rear for a while. Hard wired into my sidelights, recorded onto Micro SD at 720p.

Will upgrade them soon as the quality isn't that great, mine were called A8 DVRs. Sample video here from the front:

    Night

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hbPdLuX5sNc

    Day:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8pkKL...DtAezsHRFl0hbA

This one had some audio problems, turned out the MIC was broken and refitted a new one.

I have this camera bought it from this review:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gDS3Ih3KHWw

I would recommend them to anyone. For £150 for two for decent models, it would save your Excess in a crash/dispute, help fight fraud etc.

I'm looking into starting a business into a product I sell at the moment, for a plug and play removeable dashcam - Stay Tuned.

My thoughts on dash cams, don't buy cheap (Under £50 per camera), buy one with a G SHOCK Sensor, this will auto save any video files in intervals of usually 1-5 mins, this will save it on a secure part of the memory card, so incase it corrupts it's always safe. Buy one with an internal battery if you can, often the smaller cameras are low voltage/power so can stay turned on ALL the time, or some run on a battery for 5-60minutes after ignition is off, and even some "wake up" when G sensor is activated and record for X amount of time from there.

The idea of having one is to clearly see what you're recording, don't skimp!

    Pro's

    * Can prove liability disputes for a car claim.
    * Can help prove fraud - Saving you your excess and no claims discount
    * Security of any hit and run cases
    * It's fucking cool to see your driving back sometimes.
    * Used as a witness video to other people crashing, my friend did it and charged £25/£100 for a copy to the insurance company!

    Cons'

    * To retain time & date stamps, you need them hard wired in, not always easy.
    * Often most models available unsightly and obstructive on the front screen.
    * Research needed to find the right one for your car, as wires are not always easy to hide, angles need checking as don't need too much exposure from the sun.
    * Having cameras hanging in your window makes the vehicle a break in risk, so not always great.

I recommend you look at the YT channel above he's done shit load of reviews, and do some proper research.

Currently insurance companies don't offer discount for cameras, but the savings you could make would be worthwhile having them.

I saw these are a legal requirements in some countries now - hopefully it will be the same here so we don't all keep getting our pants pulled down by insurance companies!

Can't see it, you'd need someone to police it.

Expect to see insurance companies offer them as form of discount shortly, and offer discounts for certain models or categories being installed etc.

I've just ordered one of those Transcend DrivePro 200s but see it doesn't come with GPS. Have any of you had to use one of these in an accident as I'm wondering if the lack of GPS is a good thing (it's not imprinted a speed) or a bad thing?

Won't make a difference, as it will only show your speed in any scenario.

If the other party accuses you of speeding, it's not material to the liability decision unless there is a trained witness (Police officer or VOSA/DVLA agent) which lets face it, is a very small chance.

Under most Section1 of a motor policy, when you intimate an insurance motor claim, you pass all liability decision making rights over to your insurance company. Even if you were bombing it and another car pulls from a side road. Unless your speed can be verified by the trained people mentioned above, speed gets disregarded.

    Don't worry pal, it's sound.

Thanks mate - I've cancelled the Amazon order for the time being as thought I'd better do some more reading - it says the ETA would be a few weeks so that gives me plenty of time!

Depending on budget and how big/hidden you want it.

    I recommend these two.

(I run the A8 cheaper varient of this front & back and will be upgrading to this one shortly.)
