2 of my best HDR's IMO - Drydock

Today I went down into the drydock to explore the ship from underneath. I took the camera in the even of getting a good shot and ended up getting possibly 2 of the best HDR's I have ever taken.


The one of the ship is actually a panoramic HDR, meaning because of the angle and size of the ship, I had to take 3 seperate exposures of 3 different shots, so 9 shots in total. Merge them to make 3 individual HDR's and then photomerge them to create the final image. There are a few issues I need to sort out in photoshop, but as straight photomatix goes it turned out well...

Love that really imposing composition in the first shot. Really gives a good perspective of the size of those things.

Good foreground interest in the chain shot also.

Being an amatuer I don't have a clue about the tech speak from Mr Sparhawk ;-) but agree that first one is an excellent pic imho

cheers bud. Im going to go back down into the dock tonight around 7.15pm, just after sunset to re-take the black and white one. From 7.00-7.45pm is golden hour tonight... just the right light so it should look fantastic if I get it right

Outstanding shots matey! So the first is what's know as a 'vertorama' then? You should check out a guy called klause herman who does some great work in the same way! But yeah the second one too has great foreground interest and a classic photomatix! Job well done!

Seriously... Do you actually work there or do you take your packed lunch the wife makes you along with your camera and just take pictures/videos all day making out it is a 'job'!

Great pics. I do want to be critical of the second one however.. I am no expert so I do not expect anyone to care, but the red on the boat in the background is very very noisy. It is almost like a badly compressed jpeg. I think you could crop it and it would still be a great capture. Of course this could be the result you were expecting?

All I can say is keep up the good work (<-------- insert sarcasm smiley here) and keep posting the images until you get a proper job.

Thanks mate. Ill check out this guy later. Ive only really just started with HDR, and although not every shot needs it, I tend to look for scenes specifically that will have an impact when HDR'd.

sadly i do work here, and its very hard going at times. there are the odd occasions at weekends where i do get some free time. Like sats and suns. Next week I plan to take a trip to great yarmouth to take some HDR shots of a WW2 Pillbox that was uncovered on a beach after the recent tidal surge. keep your eyes peeled. Actually I do agree with the red being a bit shouty. Maybe ill tone down the saturation on the ships hull later and see what effect that has.

the camera is a basic Nikon D3100. I have wanted to upgrade for ages but just cant find the funds.

After looking again I think it is all software. The first image has some banding in the sky which I am sure can be repaired in photoshop.

It will just be some sliders that need adjusting slightly and marked regions I would expect? Some of the experts might be able to lend a hand here.

Yeah thats the key Goose. There is a temptation to do everything in hdr and it really is something that can make or break a good shot. choose wisely indeed. But thats really just for the HDR toning process. Nothing wrong with combining three exposures to avoid a silhouette. HDR is really a way of capturing more of that dynamic range that you see with your eye which is way more complex than camera sensor.
