I wonder how much of a boost subscriptions to Sky will get when we finally see black on all channels. I'd be interested to see the figures.

I wonder if they are gradually shutting down channels, then once the footy finishes and the new season is about to begin then they come out with a mega deal to try and entice people in..
They are going to have to do something special mind, they have so much competition now and they have lost the Champions League matches!
The best plan for them is to get Ultra HD (4k) transmitting before everyone else.

Don't get why they are shutting the shitty channels down first. Surely if they started with the sports and movies it would create more of a panic?

My theory is that as it is close to the end of the season and Football is the reason most (not all) get $ky, then it does not benefit them to do so right now.
With only a couple of weeks left, they are not going to sell many subs to footy fans nor be able to cope with the demand for new installations.
But if they give the footy fans the last couple of weeks of the season, draw up a deal towards the start of the next season then they are likely to get a lot more people on board.
Piss people off now and they will go elsewhere, BT have the Champions League so it would make sense for fans to look at alternatives.

If I was SKY.... I'd be pulling the footy on the last day of the season.
Then I'd google the loss of the football on the internet and smile to myself.
Thought it was MPEG5?

Pinched from cs-kings but makes sense to me
this 'chip-pairing' currently being implemented is fairly secure. It's the first truly secure system that Sky have implemented. It is possible to implement for SD channels also. However, this is unlikely in the short term as it would mean updating old Sky SD boxes.
There is no software fix for this even possible. In theory you would need a hardware fix on server side. In addition you would need a software fix on customer side which would need the receiverID of the server...
Even if this were achieved do you see the problem??
Sky would only need to 'purchase' a sub from a server, extract the receiverID and kill the card that's matched to it (in addition to tracing the server...)
There will be another solution.... But.... contrary to what others on here are saying, I highly doubt it will be CS.
People were saying the same when the analogue cards got switched off. Rumours of underground solutions. People with cards that unlocked all channels, but only in select circles. It's the way it goes. People are scared the cash cows they've been milking are coming to the end.... because... they are.

Nope.... MHEG = Multimedia & HyperMedia Experts Group : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MHEG-5
Not to be confused with the MPEG codec ..
Just read Sky brought in new boxes for Project Ethan.
