    Help Broken hard drive

Hi all, i have a 2tb sata drive that i use as storage only, it has gone faulty for what ever reason and when plugged in wont allow the ssd i have to start windows, with it removed windows starts fine. The hdd in question shows up fine in the boot list when i push f8 during start up so it is being seen by the pc. if it is totally dead, is there a way to recover any of the data off of it. Thanks Lithho

Stick it in a USB caddy and then plug in after the ssd has booted to windows?

Boot with a Linux liveCD and see if you can then access both drives and copy across?

    Thanks to chizh

Only connect the faulty drive and follow the BootCD instructions from here:

Also try (google it) the freezer trick, might give you a bit more time/chance to get the data off.

What brand and model drive is it? Never known an HDD firm to offer recovery under warranty!

Warranty usually only covers hardware parts unless you buy the data warranty separately so you will probably end up with a reconditioned drive. I would advise against using a recon for important data, I have found they fail quite quickly.

    2 Thanks given to evilsatan

I would try and take an image of it before it goes back with something like trueimage incase they dont try a recovery or mess about

If the drive is readable then try clones ills to save an image to your network or clone to another drive. Personally, if the data was important, I would attempt data recovery before returning. Problem is if the head is stuck on a platter you won't be able to take the drive apart and then return it.
