right heres a bit of an update...

most of this trip offshore in my spare time has been spent sanding down and filling different parts of the light. I smoothed all the outer edges so no harsh right angles. The middle "oil drains" I also smoothed. Basically the oil drains went all the way to the end of each shell, but I filled in the last bit and gave it a bit of a curve.

I secured the central pipe that will hold the small lights (which will get welded on in the next few weeks), and also conceal the wires. There was a small gap (pipe 15mm) and hole 16mm, so I filled the gap in flush with the rest of the shell.

still lots of sanding to go but i can see its starting to take shape. One the lights are on, ill have a little more sanding to do, followed by an all over 80 grit sand and a thorough cleaning before wiring the unit up, then its onto painting.

Looking good but is it just the angle of the photo or is the thing not straight? (3rd picture in previous post)

TotallyRandom - yes, for several reasons. Trying to run the wires through the light fitting, then down the central tube and out the bottom runs the risk of scratching the paint work, wheras if I do it before, it doesn't. The wire and GU10 holder can be easily masked off to prevent any paint getting on them.

To run the wire through the small light fitting, the "bullet" shaped part needs to be detached so the wire can be fed through, this would be more difficult with the thing already painted and secured. Much easier and more conveinent to run the wiring before painting.

cyprus - you are correct, the central tube does not sit 100% straight but at a slight angle. This was due to the way the welder (botch job that he did), welded the first shell onto the base shell. I am working on a way to correct this, by adding some metal to one of the legs of the base shell to even it out, but not sure how well it will work. To be determined. Even if it doesnt work, it still looks good.

C'mon Goose - you had a really unique and novel concept in this, but it's starting to look a bit odd.
Bite the bullet. Strip the putty, get the welds cleaned, get it straightened so the tube runs true then get the "S" shapes chromed.
Get the centre pole black anodized so that when it's lit, the pole looks invisible against the lights.
I reckon that would look the bollocks.

    Thanks to I Black Belt

too much work has been done to do all what you suggest, plus im happy with how the project is going. i reckon once you see the finished product you will have a different perspective.

Default Best way to wire this?

any of you guys help me out on this?

    I have 2 switches :

2A torped0 switch, has neutral and live connections

6A single pole, ( just has 2 screws which come out and i'm assuming bare wire into the holes). Single pole, so just the live is switched? and run the earth and neutral wires down the channel Provided on one side?

    which is more suitable?
