GEN042/14 OPENREACH IS RECRUITING 1600 NEW ENGINEERS

    19/05/2014 For Information
This briefing is for all Communications Providers (CPs)

The purpose of the brief is to update CPs on Openreach's new recruitment driveToday, Monday 19 May 2014, Openreach is pleased to announce a major recruitment drive, with the creation of 1,600 new engineering jobs across the UK.
The new recruits will help Openreach to continue to improve customer service and bring fibre technology to even more communities.
We would like to encourage our customers to spread the word of the new job opportunities to relatives, friends and neighbours, who may be suitable candidates.
A lack of a technical or engineering background need not be a barrier, as full training and support will be given to the right candidates who are likely to be enthusiastic, have a strong work ethic and willing to learn. Both men and women are welcome to apply.
We expect a significant number of the new engineering roles to be taken up by ex-servicemen and women, continuing our company's long-standing relationship with the UK armed forces.
We're also keen to recruit more female engineers and we have also launched a campaign encouraging women to enter the world of engineering.
Recruitment for the new roles is already underway in parts of the country. For details please click here.

    A huge boost

Ask any of our new starters and they’ll tell you that one of the biggest benefits is the confidence boost you get from doing a job like this. It’s satisfying solving problems and bringing superfast broadband to people who may not have had it before.
Another huge factor for many is the development. Openreach is one of the world’s biggest communications companies and there’s huge scope here to learn new skills and move forwards.
“You’re massively supported and always being upskilled. If I don’t feel safe, I get help. “ Emma, Customer Service Engineer, Leeds
“Do a good job and put your hand up to take on more and development opportunities will come your way” - Lauren, Optical Fibre Specialist, Derbyshire
Job satisfaction aside, there are some excellent benefits, including:

    • Your reward package offers on target earnings of £20,400 and £22,800 depending on the role. This is made up of a competitive salary of either £17k or £19k a year** (for a 40 hour week), depending on the role, and a discretionary performance bonus worth up to 20% of your salary.*
    • 22-28 days’ holiday (depending on how long you’ve been with us)
    • Contributory pension scheme
    • Free broadband plus BT vision at reduced rates
    • At least 3 weeks comprehensive initial training, followed by buddying on the job and then the opportunity for ongoing skills development
    • We provide all your tools, your clothing and a van (for use when you’re at work)

*The precise package we offer you will be determined by your skills, experience and the vacancies available locally. We are still in discussions with the Communications Workers Union on the final terms and conditions for the roles and therefore some of the above terms may alter. We’ll let you have full terms and conditions at an appropriate point. Openreach is an equal opportunities company.
**additional salary allowance of £3,380 for inner London or £1,637 for outer London

There are 3 types of people in the world - those who make things happen, those who watch things happen; and those who wondered what happened.

My interview is Monday they said 20k to 23k to me on the phone and not to worry to much about colour blindness as long as I can tell the difference from the 10 used colours

I had the same problem when I was a field engineer back in the day and the car had tracking. It was solved with a GPS blocker from ebay that plunged into the lighter. The company kept asking me to take the car in to be looked at as the tracker didn't seem to work. They never found the fault. My area team leader was wise to it though, he had one too but wasn't bothered as I still banged out a steady 6 jobs a day and my first time fix rate was good.

In my 26 years on BT I went from booking 45 mins per job and sliding off when i'd done enough to using a Psion PDA to log my jobs and upload at the end of the day..
I left in 92 fortunately just as they were bringing in the work manager laptop jobbies.. most of my old buddies say it's not improved..
I finished off on special fault investigation but needed more of a challenge so ended up in the city on digital switches in Financial institutions

gone past what most people would call retirement age, no such thing in law now, and still not giving up.. I know ... I don't look it! LOL

The good old days! 3 jobs done by lunch time and on your toes. Realist, don't be put off by me or the pay mate. Get the job, stay on the tools for a year or so and then start applying for other internal roles. There are some great jobs in BT but a field engineer isn't one of them.

Looking like BT aren't interested in me...which surprises me, 23 years at current job, so proven reliability, HNC in Communication Electronics, so more than qualified for the position....but nothing more than an acknowledgement from my online cv application on the 22nd May.
I was going to halve my salary, but I did fancy the job.

I've worked for BT 1988. 18 years outside on access network, then moved to BTW in 2004.
I had really bad experiences in different jobs 1983-88, so I can really appreciate what a good company it is to work for - best place I've ever worked as an engineer, both inside an office and outside - hope it stays that way.
To those who are applying - keep at it. I applied in '83 and got knocked back, but then again in '88 - never looked back.
    Good luck with your applications

I have done the online tests now. Sent my CV and got a reply then some tests sent. Pretty easy though I thought. Most of it is common sense

I'll go for the experience and go from there.
