Default Looking to buy a new sat nav

I'm looking to buy a new sat nav. I have the old TT One but the sound has gone on it and for some reason when I switch it off it restarts itself.

On the fifth gear program a few months ago they reckoned the Binatone was okayish which costs about £50. I'm thinking about buying one but wondered if there's any hacks I can do to it and whether any one has one already?

To be honest, i'm surprised people still buy these. I've had a couple over the years and they've all let me down - battery issues and such, plus cables and sticking them to the windscreen etc.

I use google maps, through my iphone and to be honest it's been brilliant and costs fuck all

    Hi,
To be honest I always use a Sat Nav and never use my smartphone as its too unreliable.
You can find many offers at the moment on loads of quality Garmin systems.
Trusted Garmin all my life and never had an issue with the Nuvi 2595LMT for over 2 years now.

Hope this helped and good luck!

TomTom and Garmins market has dropped dramatically in recent years due to the smartphone and they know that their industry is dying off slowly.

They only target those that do not own Smartphones. Usually the older generation.

I give it 2 years and SatNavs along with the compact digital camera will become obsolete.

I use my phone with google maps too, biggest problem is that the ciggy lighter power adapters dont charge quick enough than the phone is discharges, meaning on long trips you arrive with a dead phone.

You can get a refurbished Tomtom direct from them, I bought one for my Dad and it does the job fine. It comes with a 12 month warranty and the outer casing is new anyway by the look of it.

    https://www.tomtom.com/en_gb/shop/to...specifications

The one above which I bought costs £59 but if you use the code WelcomeTT14_uk (it's case sensitive) then they knock off another £8 so it costs £51 and includes free delivery.

This model can be patched and the latest maps installed. It is also compatible with the FM traffic receivers which can be bought for around the £15 mark.

The only downside I would say is the lack of expandable storage, it only has 1GB storage built in so you will have to consider that depending on what maps you planned to install?

    Thanks to Delboy_1976

I have owned tomtom for years and used to use it for work traveling from Cornwall and up to Hereford.
I must say not once did my tommy send me the wrong way or to a dead end road.

I still have a one xl v2 I use for America France and Portugal and wouldn't go away without it.
the guys are right tomtom units are dropping in price everyday as a smartphone will do more.
But battery and signal are the biggest issue on a smartphone if u loose power or signal your pooped.

tbh spare ihone with a different network sim its in my car as the sat nav and backup phone scenario then griffin dual charger takes care of power when on trips.

im still one of those people that likes to use a quick hand writtenor printed note if going somewhere i dont know, eg a1 for 60 miles, then j18 m40 , m40 23 miles etc etc then switch sat nav on for the last few local miles

I have a smartphone but I thought it uses data when using the sat nav option? Also when someone calls me handsfree wouldn't the sat nav switch off?
