Circa 1982 I got my first "trail bike", a Yamaha DT175 Enduro. I was mega happy that my Dad saw fit to spoil me with it, but he didn't really think it through as it weighed a ton and I was only 12 or 13 years old. So we sold it and got a Suzuki ER50 instead.
One of the lads that use to ride with us had a FS1E, great looking bike.

we have 2 ss50's in at work right now!!
someone has imported 6 of them and wants us to get them ready for registering in the uk.
i'll get some pics of them on monday (if i remember!)
one of them has been cafe racer modded, disc brakes fitted and a 100cc barrel & piston fitted - it actually looks quite cool

I know they all look a bit dated now, but when they came out the FSIE, AP50 and SS50 all looked the bollocks IMO. Although just mopeds, they looked like proper bikes, until you saw the pedals that is.
My first bike was a Garelli moped in the 70's, and my brothers was a Puch Maxi

my first road bike was a suzuki zr50
in october i built my son a derbi senda 50 for his 16th birthday, much to his mothers horror i clocked him at 52mph on the flat with my ex police lidar speed gun

I started on a Yamaha RD50 which we got from a pig farm. The helmet stank. Before I had any CBT I caught my brother taking it for a spin through the villages, so naturally I was a bit pissed off with him and wanted a go. Got back and on it and went straight up the road, stopped at the junction with the brakes on and the throttle fully back and then wheeled it straight at the opposite house aiming at the window. Somehow I managed to turn it and crashed into their garage door! Spent the next few months repairing it in my dads shed not telling him how I knackered it. It came out like new with a new spay job which I was crying, coughing and sneezing black paint for weeks! Good days!
Moved onto a 1979 Yamaha DT125 and a 1997 Honda CG125 before a 1996 Honda CBR600FV. Haven't had a bike for 10 years now but if I could I'd have another tomorrow
I had a FS1E (the newer version) I still got it in garage, if you got the throttle just right you could get 50+ downhill ;-)
well, we spent the weekend trying to sort these bikes out to get them trough an MOT so they can be registered in the uk.
what i total nightmare!
both needed rewiring - nothing worked properly and there was virtually no proper connections, just wires stripped back and twisted together.
the silver and red one had its power totally unregulated and blew everything when it started, we didnt even bother starting the orange one - someone has put a 100cc barrel & piston on it, with the original 50cc head and when we looked down the sparkplug hole with a borescope we could see damage on the piston crown from where the piston is contacting the head!
AP50 here R reg last of the derestricted fellas
When I was 16 I used to have a Honda C50 which although seen as an old mans bike it was faster than the bikes my four mates had which were a Yamaha FS1E, Suzuki AP50, Honda SS50 and a Garelli 50. My C50 wasn't really legal for me to ride because it wasn't a moped ( it didn't have pedals which was a requirement in those days) but nither my mother or the police knew the difference.
After a couple of months I bored it out to a 70cc but kept the 50 cylinder head with the 70cc piston machined on a lathe to avoid fouling. Because of this combination the compression was so high the engine would squeak as the air compressed when kicking it over. The boys used to joke that I has a mouse on a treadmill inside the engine to power it. The power was fantastic for the size of the engine. I was beating 100 cc bikes easily. While I was at it I fitted a four speed gearbox and a manual clutch from a Honda SS50.
I then decided that I needed to change the look of the bike to match the power and speed so I took off the plastic leg shield and fitted a Suzuki AP50 petrol tank and seat. I cut a hole in the top of the original under-seat petrol tank and used it as tool storage. I fitted trial tyres which were 1/2" wider than the original ones and had to widen the rear pressed steel frame and fit longer shocks to accommodate the rear tyre. I fitted Honda SS50 front forks and handlebars without the gaiters so the springs were visible. Also fitted a Garelli 50 front mudguard which I was given after my mate put a match to his for the insurance money. Stupid c**nt burnt down a bus shelter in the process.
With the handlebars and bigger tyres the bike looked a lot bigger than the original C50. My cousin saw me one day in the local pub and asked if had bought a new 125 trials. Took it to a local motorcycle shop for MOT and was told that he had seen many bikes made from various bits of bikes but this was the most impressive. I customised the tank with the word Honda in Japanese letters. Was always drawing a crowd who were asking what it was because they had never seen anything like it.
Really regret not having any photos of it. (">
I had a Honda SS50 .... where are the pedals on those ones in the pic?
They were a 4 stroke moped.
