Macbook Pro 13" (Non-Retina) Upgrade

Hi All

has anyone upgraded there macbook pro from a 500GB to a 128GB SSD or 256GB SSD
want to be able to upgrade mine but could do with some advise on easiest way of doing as well as transferring the data from 500GB drive currently in the machine.

I changed my HDD for an SSD and swapped my dvd drive for an enclosure that let me put another HDD inside.

I did this after reading a post by Maltloaf I'm sure it's here somewhere I can't seem to find it though.

To upgrade the hard drive is quite a simple job. Lots of videos on Youtube showing you how.

As for data on the old drive you can either clone the partition via software and cheap caddy or cable. Depends if you just want some basic data or the actual operating system as it is now.

P.S I did the same as Ashley and removed the dvd drive and put an second hard drive in the MAC
I used a programme called Superduper to clone mine.

Boots up quicker and seems faster in general. I did not even re install the OS

Standard Windows systems can boot from BIOS to ready to go within 15 seconds with an SSD.

Replacing your HDD for an SSD is the best upgrade you can do to any laptop or PC for a vast performance improvement.

Macs are gonna get improvements the same way.

Yeah mine boots in seconds and its a lot quicker with an SSD.

I have upgraded a lot of macbook/imac hard drives in my time, due to my work. It really is a simple step, all you need is a philips screw driver 0 or 00 will do if i remember correctly.

If your looking for the SSD and HDD combo route but do not want to lose your optical drive, Western Digital have a new Duo Drive out with 120gb SSD and 1TB HDD which looks pretty tasty

Think its called the Black2

You only get the 120gb SSD to start but then download software off the site to "unlock" the 1TB HDD partition. There is also mention on the site that they can enable Fusion Drive capability on this drive.
I currently have a Fusion drive (official apple setup) in my iMac and its amazing to have 80% speeds of SSD and storage of a standard HDD. I have not tried one of these yet, but in general the reviews are good. Only bad reviews I have seen are people complaining it doesn't work with mac (it does now!)

There are also hybrid drives out there SSHD which have 500gb-2tb HDD and a smaller 8gb SSD drive which acts as a cache, I currently have one of these in my work macbook pro and there are noticeable speed increases, however no where near the speeds of a SSD or a fusion drive

Hi All

after a few months of debating if to try upgrading my Macbook Pro i have decided to bite the bullet and do it.

decided to buy a Samsung 850 Pro 256gb SSD as well as 8gb Ram.

thought i would follow the below link method but wanted to see if anyone had a better way of doing it.

Also when I do transfer the data from my 500gb to the SSD can anyone confirm if it also transfers the OS or just all the data sat on my machine, if it does not please can someone advise how to do this or how to re-install once the machine is back up and running.

Just had to replace the screen on a 2013 21" imac while it was open we upgraded to 16gb ram and 512gb SSD vast improvement on boot/opening apps etc

i think if you do a time machine back to an external drive, then you can restore it back i think. Depends what you have got on it, i would just start again from scratch, and pop the old drive in a caddy and grab anything i needed once done.

thanks currently doing a backup to an external drive and then hopefully tomorrow will open it up and upgrade the ram and SSD

Looking at this and more ram since Yosemite crippled my Mac mini (well not crippled but def not smooth any more)
