Default XBMX / Kodi Sharing over the net.

Have recently installed KODI and am so far loving it. Over my network I noticed instantly better picture quality vs Plex so would like to switch completely.

Struggling to find best way to setup to stream over the net.

e.g. With plex I shared with a few family members and from reading this can also be done with Kodi just struggling to find a tutorial e.t.c that helps.

    Any info greatly appreciated.

    Cheers

I wasn't aware of this being possible with XBMC but since it has been updated recently to Kodi they may have added the feature in the Helix build. XBMC is more of a frontend.

Why not just run Plex server for external access and then use xbmc locally.

I'm puzzled how the picture is any better in xbmc rather than Plex. The only thing I can think is you were transcoding in Plex and you are now direct playing (which is the only thing you can do) in xbmc. They should look the same unless you for them set up differently.

I am going to set mine up like that beerman, I just love XBMC too much to let it go but when I finally get fibre here I would like to access my stuff remotely.

I imagine Plex may have been set with a lower bitrate and as you say Kodi is playing directly at full bitrate.

Still reading but it's deffo not the plex plugin for XBMC.

Regards the quality everyone that was there when I first tried (who previously frequently watched stuff at mine via plex) was like wtf
    The quality difference was wow.
In plex I had everything set to the max e.g. 1080p at highest MB.

A Little confused myself but the proof was indeed in the pudding.

Was wanting to move away from plex as was having loads of issues of late. Stuttering, films just stopping with errors e.t.c

Have installed XBMC/Kodi alongside Plex and also MediaBrowser 3 and they both working flawlessly . Only plex is giving me grief, so not network related.

Problems were both local and over the internet with plex.

Thanks for your input guys. Will keep digging.

Would be interested to hear what you find... That is about the only feature on plex that I would love to have on XBMC.

I did the opposite. Left XBMC, after having issues, for Plex and haven't looked back since.

The Helix builds of Kodi have not really impressed me enough to dump the features gained using Plex, but if what you say is true, I may be persuaded.

I will obviously keep my Plex Server on for remote access and streaming to famo and friends.

OK been digging and most stuff I read turned out to be bollox.

    However there is this https://thepcspy.com/read/remote-str...ess-xbmc-kodi/
but as it states in the link the overheads of SSH mean it may be useless for many without very good tinternet.

    Worth a read though.

So far my thoughts are, Media Browser 3 for streaming over the internet (which I find better than plex / far less problems for me)
Can still use Kodi as client if you want and I will use Kodi locally for streaming in my own home.
I have done a LOT of tests locally and picture quality for me is FAR superior to plex.

My setup is PC hard wired to router played usually via xbox 360 client also hard wired.
I used the same setup when testing for picture quality e.t.c. No noticeable difference in audio quality.

Mostly tested 720p episodes of Dexter and others plus 1080p various movies.

Will keep digging and doing a bit more research and if I find anything I think may be of interest will post it up.

    Cheers

If you are willing to set up a VPN between the two locations, you can share Plex, XMBC, or anything for that matter between the two locations.

    Thanks to Over Carl

I like the idea of plex for streaming because I believe you can set the quality so if I am away on crappy wifi I can still stream ok. Until I get a bandwidth upgrade there's not much point for me though
