    Help Self Assessment Walkthrough/guide/explanation?

    Hi Guys,

I am going through my self assessment form online (my accountant vanished) and I'm really confused. Is there an idiots walkthrough/guide/explanation?

I am not sure what I should be selecting.

    • I am an unpaid director.
    • A student who is in their final year, I receive student finance
    • I also receive Housing Benefit, DLA and some care allowance (separate account, under control by social services and myself).

What paperwork do I require to complete this in one go?

Can any of you kind folk help? I am getting a new accountant this year as this is a nightmare.

    Thank you

This post isn't going to be much help. But every single section of the self assessment 'form' has a ? you can click on that fully explains what you need to fill in and why.

This year, the site has had a bit of a refurb and also comes with one of those live chat things, so if you're really stuck, maybe click on that and ask your questions?

Personally, unless you're flush, I wouldn't waste your money on an Accountant for this. If you spend a little time reading the descriptions and/or asking them for help, you can do it all yourself in a couple of hours for gratis.

Just make sure you have all your bank details, benefits, taxable gains etc with you. As said it will take a while but read each section carefully and try and be accurate as you can. Only a few days left so I would crack on with it otherwise it's a fine.

Why are you being asked to complete a return? Just because of the directorship? You may be able to call them and state you have no relevant income for the year and get them to cancel the request, pot luck on the call centre though

A little update. HMRC have been really helpful! I met with one of their tax advisors today who helped me complete the form within a couple of minutes. I'm glad that I didn't use an accountant as the cheapest quote I got was £163 + VAT
