Default Tado or Nest Smart thermostat? And will it work?

In my quest to try and automate my home as much as possible I'm now looking at a smart thermostat.
I've narrowed it down to the Nest or Tado. The nest has a sexy look (design by the same lot as the ipod) whereas the Tado has the location awareness feature. I have seen people using IFFFT to control the nest location awareness so that may not be an issue.

Does anyone have any experience with either? A big question would be will it work with my heating? I assume I would leave my heating on the "all day" setting and let either thermostat work it out?

My heating system has a boiler in the kitchen, a wired thermostat on the wall, a programmer in a cupboard in the bathroom and a hot water cylinder.

I have a nest and its great.

Heating is set to on all the time, the nest replaces the room stat and controls when it comes on and turns off.

Very interested in heating automation, so this topic is one I will be watching! I've been looking at home automation forever and cannot make up my mind what protocol to use

i have the nest and the auto learning function i imagine would be great for couples with normal jobs. in my situation with me being away every other month and the missus being home at 6 every day, the leaning function didnt work as well as we thought. ended up turning it off in the end and manually creating our own schedule. works fine now.

Oe and CMG do you use IFFFT and the location aware plugin? I'm wondering how well it works. A friend has the tado and says he hasn't needed to touch his heating in months. The only thing stopping me buying the Tado at the moment is the sexy looks of the Nest but if the location awareness works via third party apps I might just buy one.

Another one I've found is the Honeywell Lyric which does the auto learning like the nest but also has location awareness. Unfortunately it's not available in the UK yet with Honeywell only saying 2015 and no solid date.

I use IFTTT (If this, then that) with my moto 360. It's a powerful tool. Don't see why it wouldn't work with google maps and nest (for instance).

Also using Nest and have a non standard working life. But still using the auto schedule, and we also use the skylark app on our iphones. This turns the heating off when you leave and on when you come back in.
Also Google now is supposed to do the same sort of thing, but were on iPhones so can't comment on how well that works.

I have individual motors on each radiator turning the valve on and off,

This means that I can have the bedrooms off during the day, the study on only at hours from working from home etc...

It can all be controlled via my phone (needs a pc on constantly) So I can turn a room on when away from home if I know im coming back early etc.

It cost me £450 to implement and Iv saved 40% on my gas.

We did 6 rooms, and 7 radiators.

Part of the saving was the stats I could pull from the devices, and we realized heating the kitchen (via adjacent rooms) wasn't working. So now the kitchen's doors are shut, and its very cold in there unless we are cooking.

The system I used can be found on the conrad website, (and cheaper on ebay.de) uses a FS20 protocol. (search for FS20.) This protocol now means I can also buy light switches etc, and still control them all from the same app (called FHEM)

TBH with my nest and our routine we never have to touch the heating, the house is warm when we need it.
If we go away at the weekend it will auto-away fine and we just turn it on using our homes when we are an hour or so from home, nice and warm when we get in.

As my schedule is so over the shop - pints one night, work from home another nest just wouldn't learn for me. They're missing out on some really easy to add functionality that would realy up their game. Not just on when it's on but temperature bands and learning how well insulated your house is so it turns off the radiators before it hits x degrees (as they keep warming), link this to weather reports and it knows when to bump it back on for 15 mins or so - sure there's big money to be saved if done right.

npower are cunts, turned up as mate was getting cable installed, pretended to be with them and got him to sign over to npower. They were all dodgy, going round the students telling them it was just for info etc.

Walked into the apple store today and it was too shiny to leave behind. Walked out with a nest (paid for of course). I've been quoted £75 for fitting but will see what a mate can do first. Will let you know how I get on.
