Help Sat Nav can't get GPS signal

Hi, I have a Clarion NX700E double din multimedia unit fitted in the car. For the past 12 months the sat nav has struggled to get a GPS connection. On a good day it can take over an hour to connect, other times we may go a week without getting a connection then it suddenly connects! Even when it gets a GPS connection it drops every few minutes and generally gets confused.

I've tried restarting the unit and have installed the latest map update. There don't appear to be any other software updates available as the unit is about 4 years old. We don't live in a built up area and prior to the problems we always had a good signal.

I guess I'd like to know what my options are. If I took it to a car audio shop would they be able to check whether the unit is getting a GPS signal? Is it possible to boost signal strength by adding a new receiver? Can I install alternative sat nav software like Garmin or TomTom or restore to factory settings? Or am I likely to need a new unit? Thanks Steven

My option would be to read the message you got when you registered to be a member here.

I had a sat nav like that, turned out to be a faulty gps antena lead, get the audio shop to check it out saves time and frustration in the end.

Does your car have a heated front screen? I've known these to cause GPS issues.

Yup, what BigBrand said. My car has a heated windscreen with an 'Athermic coating' which although doesn't mess up my TomTom or phone GPS, pretty much kills the GPS on my dashcam. So, if your car also has one, likely it's that that's causing it. What model car?

You could try get an external GPS antenna fitted and link it to that I guess.

Plus. Also consider what Mickey said
