Advice 2004 focus 2.0 auto mk1.5 wheel bearing advice

Since I bought this car it has made a knocking noise from the front end somewhere on the steering or a front wheel.

it doesn't knock constantly but does knock when turning the wheel left or right.
i have had the car checked by two separate garages and it has passed two mot's like this in two garages with the garages knowing of the issue.

neither can find the fault or say where the noise is coming from.
so as im looking at selling the car I think it's going to be a hassle trying to sell it as it is.

i thought maybe changing the wheel bearings on the front to rule them out would be a start even though they don't make any noise.

now are they press in and press out bearings or can I just unbolt and swap out?

I'm not a mechanic in the slightest but I used to have a Mk1 Focus and the link arms went on it causing a creaking and knocking noise when making turns. Similarly, my colleague has an 04 plate Focus hatch. He's also had Link arms replaced.

The next car I had was a 53 plate MINI and it developed a knocking noise when making left and right turns. Again that was a rod or something connected to the suspension.

Sorry I can't help any more, can only tell you what caused similar issues on cars I used to own.

    Thanks to dpSparhawk

Had a similar problem on my old escort 1800 diesel about 15 years ago sure it turned out to be a universal joint in the steering

wheel bearings wont normally knock, they make more of a droning or even rumbling noise when driving.

something that knocks sounds more like a bush or link arm.

if it's a constant knocking while turning left or right ( pulling out of junctions for example ) and goes away when you straighten up it could be the CV joints
or if it's just a knock or clunk when turning the steering at slow speeds that could be related to front suspension top mounts or worn dampers
if you get a clunk or knocking when going over potholes or speed bumps it could be anti roll bar bushes / drop links , wishbone bushes or even top suspension bushes it's hard to try and diagnose a problem over the net but it's all i can think of at the moment

Jack it up and give the wheel a good shake , you should see what's moving , shake the drop likes , when it's on the ground .
