    Hi M8
I tried everything and gave up after three days non stop rebooting -loaded UNRAID instead about 2-5 more reboots and attempted installs and Microserver would have been in bottom of pond.
    Thanks anyway M8

    Hi Guys
I love my Gen 8 Microserver and have thrown money at it to make it the best it can be, customising it as I use it every single day. what have you guys done to your stock Gen8 Proliants?
    I have:
    upgraded CPU twice - currently it is Intel® Xeon® CPU E31260L @ 2.40GHz
Upgraded ram to 16 GB Kingston ECC
Added a 256 gb Kingston SSD as a cache drive
Added a 3tb WD red as parity drive
Added 3 x 3tb WD red as data drives
Added Unraid server plus as O/S
Added hpe ps1810-8g 8-port gigabit switch to the top
So spent a bloody fortune, but worth it all - what you guys done with yours?

On top of my spec in the OP I've added an SSD to store the VMs, don't think there's much more I can do!

Plugged it in and added ram and drives that's about it.
    8gb ram added and 14tb in HDD's
it does exactly what I wanted it for and more so I'm well happy with it.
I woud love to add more to it but funds just don't allow it, and now with a new baby here I have better and more important things to spend the cash on.

No worries. Found a couple of the E3-1265L on ebay for around £230 so assuming the price is fair I might go for that.

Out of interest what are you doing with your box that requires you to upgrade the CPU?

I've added an SSD for my VMs, 3 x 3TB WD Reds, 1 x 1TB WD Black, 8GB RAM [cheap off of a mate], 1 Intel Quad Port NIC.

    2 x Linux VMs, 1 Win2k12 VM, 1 x Xpenology VM, 1 x Linux Test VM.

The only future upgrades I have planned are to swap out the 4GB for another 8GB, possibly upgrade the WD Black for something a bit more efficient, and maybe change the fan for something a tad quieter and more efficient [not that the existing fan is nosey but I hear it spin up once or twice a month].

To be honest it runs perfectly, I get full reports and notifications for most things and the VMs are backed up weekly to rotated RDX media. My next big project will be migrating everything out of the way into a cab in my cellar. Maybe a cheeky new WiFi router before then though

All I run on mine is Xpenology and a plex server. In all honest it runs fine until I play something that is HEVC or 4k then it stutters. Hoping the processor would fix that problem.

I may have the complete wrong end of the stick when I say this but I've never seen the point in Plex because the only devices that stream from my NAS are internal, and even then it's only ever one or two devices at the most. Plex always came across as a power hungry beast that was only really worth while if streaming to several devices at once internally, or streaming extrernally.

From the little I do know it's worth having more grunt at the server end to transcode rather than shfting the load onto your wireless or ethernet network. But using Xpenology and only ever streaming to one or two devices, regardless of the source [.avi, .mkv, h264, h265 - no 4k at present] I've never had any issues.

On that basis I'd expect a better CPU to improve things for you. But by how much I wouldn't like to say as it depends on your environment and many other factors.

I considered Unraid when I was first building my box but decided against it for some reason, I can't for the life of me remember why. But with hindsight I'd have gone with Unraid as there isn't a decent upgrade path with Xpenology as it's a hack. Whilst Xpenology works well, I don't use any of the advanced features it offers as this is all taken care of using other servers I have. I probably will migrate to Unraid at some point, just no real need at the moment.

    Thanks to AP0ll0UK

It may struggle with PMS streaming/transcoding, my N40l did and that is almost the same spec as yours so I created a VM on my ESXi server for PMS and it seems to work really well now.

I kept getting messages on Plex (when viewing remotely) that the server wasn't powerful enough to transcode and when I looked it up online it seemed the general consensus was that hardware wasn't powerful enough. I didn't think much had improved on the n54l over the n40l but perhaps I'm wrong!!
