Advice Spots on the Bottom of Alcohol Cans

A few of my mates have been going on for this for a while, saying that certain brands have a small black dot on the bottom of inferior cans.

The rumour as it was presented to me was that old/stale beer that is still fit for human consumption but doesn't taste right gets mixed in with fresh, then these fresh/stale mix cans get a dot on the bottom.

I never believed it myself for quite a while.

My current regular drink is Magners Pear (why do I get the feeling I'm going to get ripped for admitting this....).

Anyway recently I've noticed a few cans that tasted terrible mixed in a four pack. Some shops have these, while some shops seem to never be affected with this issue, my suspicion is clean crates cost a touch more than ones that have a few dodgy cans.

Funnily enough, all the duff cans did indeed have a mark on the bottom, and all the ones without the mark tasted normal.

I noticed with the Magners though, they have tried to be a bit more subtle, and instead of putting a blatant black mark on the bottom, they seem to be putting a small dab of what resembles yellow highlighter, along with a tiny numbered stamp.

Funny how I used to laugh at my mates before, but now I will check the bottom of each can

    Thanks to Over Carl

I might be wrong but I think this may be a valid reason.

That's not nearly as fun as Over Carl's theory!

All I can say is try it yourself.

Next time you get a dud can, have a look closely at the bottom (you might need a bright light). If you find a mark, compare it with the rest and see if it's different.

I used to laugh at my mates who said this for a while until I randomly came to the same conclusion myself.

The marking machine manufacturer seems to propose perfectly honest and legitimate reasons for the machine to be made.

However they don't operate the machines. and the bit that got me scratching my head was how come only the shit cans have a mark and the good ones have no marks?

I came in here expecting to read about Spotty arses then I noticed the thread starter wasn't either Bertie or CJ.

Still maybe we will get some contributions about rimming as the bottoms of cans could be deemed rims.
