Startup password / Syskey on laptop after a scam phone call.
HI guys,
Got a lptoptop in today from a scammed old lady. Managed to get £1000 from her credit card and also locked her out of Windows 7 with a syskey password. Never had a ransomeware like this before.
Thought i'd be able to restore to an earlier date but the scammers also removed all restore points.
Going to try NT offline password manager next as i've read it may be able to do syskey passwords as well as windows passwords.

Well i tried to reset the SAM with Offline Password Reset without success.
It removed the password prompt but Windows then couldn't repair the registry so just got into an endless boot loop.
Finally decided to re-install Win 7, which kept all the docs in the windows.old folder.
Now installing the 5 million updates now.

Are the days gone where you could just get the password hash, use rainbow tables and get the pw back? Last I used that was xp so no real idea here - looks like it's still valid route http://project-rainbowcrack.com/table.htm
