mother board stuck at boot

hi
recently got a ABIT KN8 Motherboard with a AMD Athlon 64 3500 which was supposedly working
ok before but when i stuck in in a case with memory etc it boots to first blk screen telling me that i have
dvd drive 2gb memory harddisk etc but does not into windows install disk the only thing i can do is hit del
into set up but when there its unresponsive cant move up or down settings the only buttons that seem to do
anything are esc (exit and save) and return.
ive removed the cmos battery for an hour to reset and tried different keyboard usb and ps2 still same responses.
am i doing something stupid? (probably)

any help appreciated

Sounds like something hardware is stopping it from going past pre-bios check.

Do you get any "beeps" when you turn on the pc.

hi thanks for reply
no beebs and have removed video card etc and left one stick of ram which i later changed for a different one
so was mb cpu and memory still same result

can you alter bios to "safe state" using default options

If bios is setup wrong or corrupt find the bios Reset jumper ( usually written on ) and bridge the jumper turn on for few seconds, turn off and remove jumper.

i would also take a look at any capacitors on the board, may be one or two swollen, if so scrap it..
i have seen a few KN8 with this problem, the board is getting on a bit.

These things are a lot easier to diagnose face to face...
You say ps2. The abit website doesn't mention a ps2 controller. Are you saying that your motherboard has a ps2 socket for your mouse / keyboard?

hi thanks all for their replys (yes ment ps2 port for keyboard)
i thought removing the battery would wipe the bios, but did the jumper wipe
and 4a while had access 2 bios ok at least :-) tho even tho i have a win install disk in
and have dvd disk set to boot first it stalls and says ntldr not present or sum thing like that
since then the bios stated that there had been changes to cpu and was reloading defaults and since then
its back to no control in bios and no boot and no amount of jumper resets seems to help.
on a side note i put a old ide drive in it from another computer and it boots to that windows
ok tho stalls as its asking for authorization (due to it being hd set up on different computer)

maybe just time to bin the sucker

The other hardrive, is it a sata or same as the one your tried. I can recall I had a similar issue with my asus republic board. It was a matter of altering a few settings in the bios to get it to work.

If its a sata one then have you tried setting it to sata 1 port.
What I always do now and is so much faster is create a USB boot disk and throw win7 on it. This install so much quicker.

Pressing on my keyboard give me a boot option and I install from the usb

hi yes was trying to originally install on a sata disk and tried to install win 7 from
its own dvd drive and then via external usb dvd player never seems to boot from it
and used different disks inc a xp disk.
