Seems surprisingly cheap. Guessing it's not a Macbook Pro and probably not retina on a 2010 model though.

When it comes to Mac I have no idea but she needs a Mac for uni for her journalism course.
Shes about to pay £300 and don't want her being ripped off,

Model number would be a good start. Is it a Pro or an Air? Is battery life important to her? If so what is the state of the battery?
As much info as you can get really.

    Thanks to flik

Sounds like a white macbook, not a bad price but a few things to bear in mind/check

    1) check the bottom of it, these things are notorious for the rubber bottom to delaminate and come off/bubble
    2) Whilst not yet, the machine will be classed as Vintage within 12 months, this means you will not be able to get it repaired at any Apple store or Authorised Service Provider
    3) With the machine being 5 years old, id bet the battery will be close or under 80% of its full charge capacity, and will only get worse. Check if its been replaced in the past, and try to find out when.
    4) 2gb of ram is nowhere near enough to run Yosemite, you need a minimum of 4gb but id never recommend that. Put 8gb in it and you'll be fine. (Note that Apple say the max this will take is 4gb, but you can put 16gb in it and it will work with no issues at all)
    5) Check the Hard drive, id be tempted to put a SSD into this to help with performance.

    Hope this helps

It's a high price for an old laptop, they DO hold their value but . . . you'd be better off buying new and getting Applecare if poss. . . . the majority of my guitar students going off to Uni get MacBooks and they really are the best bet. One of the very first unibody MacBooks. .

    http://www.sellyourmac.com/mac-produ...-mc516lla.html
NOT a Pro as it only has 2gig Ram, lots on eBay with better spec but I really would buy recent or pref new. .

Very wise, grab Applecare too, you have until the end of year one to get it. .

I too have been contemplating getting a mac of sorts for the missus. There seem to be loads for sale at over inflated prices, a lot of borked spares repairs etc and some I just wouldn't touch with a shitty stick.

I didn't want to spend a lot as I know it's just a fad thing for her. When she realises it's not the same as windows or doesn't work the way she thinks it does it will no doubt be retired.

Might still try and do a trade in for her old acer revo and get an old Intel 20" iMac and see how she gets on with it...

Would say if u 'need' to have one rather than 'want' one then new might be a better call.

I can't recommend a MacBook enough I bought a 2010 white one a couple of years ago, upgraded the ram and followed a post maltloaf made about installing a ssd in the optical drive space.

It runs great and I use photoshop, protools etc without any problems.

I think I'll run it till it dies the buy a new one.

Wait till she's a student and she'll get a really good discount, if carrying around all day the air should be powerful enough (unless running specialist software) and noticeably lighter/easier to carry around.

Personally ly I wouldn't bother with AppleCare a lot is covered under sale of goods act or household insurance.

It's just insurance - £200 for 3 years on a MacBook/air/pro, not sure what the excess is £55 on iPhone and AppleCare no longer covers you for liquid damage. Basically something has to fail without you damaging it which should fall under the sale of goods act or decent home insurance in the case of damage. Or gamble a fix is less than £200 - which is a lot when a MacBook Air is 749 and even less with a student discount - that's over 25% of the price on insurance where you're 99% covered by UK legislation.

I don't buy extended Warranty on anything BUT Apple kit and then only the more expensive kit. I'm not going into details here but it's been invaluable to me over the years, individual choice

Cheers guys she is already a student and gets discount in Apple.
My wife has a student card too and her mates a WPC so she gets discount there too.

I with Blacksheep on this, if you have got to buy insurance to cover it from failure then I would be buying from a different manufacturer.

5+ years ago I'd be possibly with blaggard as AppleCare covered almost anything from dropping the product throwing drinks over them etc but they've slowly removed certain parts of the cover.

Default Looking at MacBook for daughter uni.

    Small update.

Went to apple and quietly told to hold off if we can as discounts will be bigger with The purchase with the back to school offers in August and apple care is only £48 for three years with her discount.
Looking at around £800 for a MacBook Pro with ac.
