Copying CDs and DVDs for yourself is now illegal again

It is once again illegal for people in Britain to copy CDs and DVDs for personal use, after a ruling made by the High Court today.
The ruling overturned a law introduced by the government in October, which had allowed people to copy copyright material for their own private and personal use.
The decision, which came after a challenge from musicians' union BASCA and music industry association UK Music, found that the government had acted unlawfully by introducing the measure.
The groups argued that the law was inconsistent with EU regulation, which allowed for people to copy such material on the condition that rightsholders receive "fair compensation".
The ruling will affect all products subject to copyright which can be digitally duplicated - such as CDs, DVDs and e-books.

DVDs and e-books are also affected by the ruling.

While the law brought in last year had made it legal for people to "burn" a CD to keep, for example, in their car stereo, it was at no point legal to sell these copies or distribute them to friends or family.
It is currently unclear how the change will now be enforced, or whether the government will attempt to bring in new legislation following the ruling.
Previously, very few prosecutions had been brought over the personal copying of music.
In response to today's decision, the government said it is "considering the implications of the court rulings and the available options".
Jo Dipple, CEO of UK Music, said: "It is vitally important that fairness for songwriters, composers and performers is written into the law.
" My members’ music defines this country. It is only right that Government gives us the standard of legislation our music deserves.
"We want to work with Government so this can be achieved."

Who buys physical media anyway? Surely you can buy digital and create your own CDs to play on older hardware.

Probably to give the police more powers when pulled over.
Policeman" tyres are ok, cars in good condition, youv'e not been drinking, you have tax insurance and mot. after searching your vehicle you have no drugs. Wait a minute, cuff him lads he has a back up cd of Beethovens symphony 9."
Me "but he has been dead years, who will get the royalties surely not the dead man himself or his long last family ? must be going to the establishment...."
Policeman reads me my rights for a back up cd.

    seriously though

nearly every car i get in at work has a load of back up cds in the glovebox or floating around the cab. If you get a fine per disc could turn out quite the money spinner.

I wonder if this is the same bunch who phone my work demanding money every six month so I can have the Radio on ?

I don't want to spoil a good headline, but I thought the 'fair [money for nothing] compensation' claim was more about getting the government to levy money from recording/storage technology?

I know coppers with burnt CDs. Just saying.

    This shit won't stick.

Besides, who uses CDs these days? MP3 all the way. Especially remotely via phone. Doesn't exist, can't be nicked.

    Edit:
How does this get enforced if you bought the single for download and burnt it off?

Government introducing laws they know nothing about again? Make tracks impossible to copy more than once (somehow).

It should be illegal to own a CD, never mind copy one.

All this shows is how far behind the UK government is behind the times.

Surely they have tech advisors, mind you - I asked my child's school IT teacher her opinion of the Raspberry PI and she thought it was some sort of email virus.

I wonder if this means Apple will have to remove the CD ripping bit from iTunes?

They've already had fair compensation - you've bought the bloody thing!
