    Help PS3 hard drive problem

Got a ps3 off a friend said his hard drive had died could i install a new one for him, i'm more a 360 user but simples i thought, think again...

It's a slim ps3, i format the drive to fat 32 in windows, create a PS3/UPDATE folder and copy over the PS3UPDAT.PUP file, insert it back in the ps3 and... nothing keeps saying insert a drive with update over 4.60 on it, (i'm using update 4.75), tried 2 drives same problem, it still says the same when i insert the drives in my ps3 so it must be the hard drives at fault, or something i'm doing wrong.

Any idea what i'm doing wrong?

I'm sure I just stick my drive in and there was a format option in the settings.

Is it a message like this https://support.us.playstation.com/a...tail/a_id/1189 ??

Try putting the update on a USB drive and boot the ps3 with the HDD installed...

It is that message mate and that's what i'm trying, but i can't get it to recognise the update.

Save the update data to the following location on the storage media. Using a computer, create a folder named "PS3" on the storage media. Within the "PS3" folder, create a folder named "UPDATE". Make sure that both folder names are all UPPER CASE. Save the update data in the "UPDATE" folder.

Be sure to save the update data as noted below. If the data is not saved in the correct way or the folders are not created exactly as shown, the PS3 will not recognize the update data.
Location: Save in the "PS3" folder > "UPDATE" folder
File name: Save as file name "PS3UPDAT.PUP"

    Maybe it's the
PS3UPDAT.PUP file? i'm getting it from their european site, does anyone have a 100% working version?

    Sorted!

Just in case anyone ever needs help with this in future, make sure your USB stick is working and you download the correct update file for your region console
