Help Amending file names/copying backto host PC

    Hi Chaps.
I have a Vista machine, with an external 1.5TB HD.
The drive largely contains all my movies, music, tv shows etc and some trusted software.
I've a couple of laptops/netbooks that I connect to it wirelessly to stream movies onto from the host PC.

I can copy, say a movie, or some software from the host, onto a netbook, but what I want to be able to do is copy from the netbook back to the host machine.
I also want to be able to rename files on the host machine via the remote netbook.

The drive itself is showing as shared, as are the folders and sub folders, but the "read only" radio button in the properties is checked.
I've tried several times to uncheck it and apply changes, however it doesn't seem to save the change.
Is this all I need to do, to be able to copy back to the host and rename files on the host? If so, then I'll research the read only button.

    hope you can help

There's a tiny program called 'TakeOwnership' that will allow you to TakeOwnership of the folders files and copy them wherever you want to, worked for me anyway.

    Thanks to ilscuro

Not tried this on vista but works on win 7 - on the host machine you right click the external drive in my computer, properties, sharing, advanced sharing, tick to share and give it a name. Permissions, add the local user account of the host machine with full permissions and if there is an entry for 'everyone' remove it. Save and apply.

if the host machines local account doesn't have a password then add one as windows needs to have settings changed to allow access without a password. On the netbook browse to \\hostshosthame\ then right click the external drive share, map as a network drive. Select to use different credentials and use the username and password of the host machine, the same as you used in the permissions. You may have to enter the username in the form of hosthostname\user but usually this isn't required.

that should then work as you are connected to the share with full permissions. If not you can alter the ownership etc, I assume you can edit the files when on the host machine?

    Thanks to evilsatan

This is a USB device right?

Just rewirte the permissions on the HD.
Right drive letter in question > Properties > Security > Ownership > Have some of that!!!

    Thanks to akimba
