Default 2 wifi routers 1 house. Wifi fix...?

Hi guys, I had wifi range issues in my house for ages and have finally got round to running some cat6 cables from top to bottom.

My question is could I connect another wifi router to the end of a cat6 cable running from a switch and have it relay my wifi upstairs? Also would I be able to attach an amazon fire tv to the back of the new router? Ie would the ports still work?

    many thanks

    Devs (shit with networking!)

Someone will be a long to give you the proper advice but I would say you will connect the two together but creating two separate wifi networks eg upstairs and downstairs and put on different channels

Using the router ports will be fine they will act as just if on a switch

Mobileman just as crap with networking unless it's home plugs or wireless repeaters [emoji106]🏼

Just make sure you turn off the DHCP server on one of the routers (otherwise they'll both dish out IPs from their own pool and will eventually clash) and ensure they're both on the same network with different management addresses - i.e.:

    Router 1: 192.168.0.1 - DHCP On - SSID Upstairs
    Router 2: 192.168.0.2 - DHCP Off - SSID Downstairs

Once they're configured like Mobileman says the second router will just work as an access point.

With more expensive kit you can use the same SSID and the device will get handed over but with a lot of consumer gear it just doesn't work too well sometimes.

The switch ports should all work as normal.

set them both to have Static IPs,
turn off DHCP server on the 2nd router
make sure you connect the ethernet cable to the standard ports and not the WAN port on the second router

Thats great guys many thanks for the help. I'll grab myself another router and give it a go.

Is it important to have them set to Static IPs? I ask because I'm using Virgin Media and pretty sure that they do not provide..

    Cheers, Devs

the static IP's we are referring too are on your local network mate (192.168.0.1 etc.) and not your external IP provided by virgin (that does change but not very often so its almost a static IP anyway)

set router one to something like 192.168.100.1
set router two to something like 192.168.100.2

doesnt have to be that but you get the idea, the reason you give them static IP's is thats its easier when you need to login in the web interfaces etc.

Your main router already has a static ip as in the default gateway, probably 192.168.0.1

So the second router I would assign an IP from the arse end of the range like 192.168.0.254

You would enter this in local ip or default gateway field, for thoroughness you can also shorten the DCHP scope to exclude the fixed addresses you assign to other LAN devices.

    Thanks to MajorFU

If you only got 1 router don't get another router get a wireless access point instead

Hmm interesting mate, I hadn't really considered that... Ideally I wanted an extra port so I could plug an amazon fire TV in.. and on the likes of these:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/NETGEAR-EX27...28WNR2020v2%29

They just have one ethernet port.

Out of interest would an access point allow me to keep the same SSID so that any devices would seamlessly connect as I moved around the house?

    Cheers!
