    Default 3D Printer

I was browsing aliexpress and noticed you can get a 3d printer for around £170 or even a dual extruder version for £230 in kit form.

    Single extruder
    http://www.aliexpress.com/item/2014-...74_75,201409_1

    Dual extruder
    http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Free-...74_75,201409_1

It's the open source one (Prusa I3) which looks a bit fragile. I have a few (lots) questions if anyone has any experience in one.

How hard are they to set up (from kit)? Do they smell of burning plastic, i.e. would I need to to put it in the shed rather than stinking out the house? Where are the best places to buy the plastic?

And more importantly what are you using it for? Does owning one enhance your life? Are there any sites I can download files I can just print?

    Thanks to beerman

Would also be interested in info at the price ??? That is a fraction of others I have looked at.

That is really decently priced, I'd like to hope the instructions are very well produced, and not the normal chinglish.

Add £40ish for customs and charges.
I had been looking at getting one for a good while but seemed to hover around the £240 mark for ages. When this dropped to £175 i decided that was about right.
Took a fortnight to arrive IIRC.
    Got http://www.aliexpress.com/item/2015-...026704108.html .

Not had to time to build it yet - not even unboxed TBH as many things going on with family that have had major impact on my free time.

Everything comes on a DVDR using 1.6Gb. Videos, drivers and screenshots of the various bits of software also included.
Build instruction is via videos - no commentary, just music on loop but the videos are pretty good quality.
Reading thru' comments etc online, it takes 4-8 hours to build and set up.

    Thanks to chizh

Random build video - not manufacturer. Leads on to the rest so some good info for you.

We had a MakerBot in our work for messing about / testing

It was a brilliant bit of kit but would really only recommend if you were really going to use/do something with as the novelty wears off as it takes hours to print out the simplest of things

    No smell bit noisy
I just used www.thingiverse.com and used all the pre made ones

Here are some of them that i printed out

imo unless you are going to spend in the thousands for a system, the quality of finished prints will not be great, very long print runs too, you will get lots of jams/fails untill you get the hang of settings/medium ect.
New Liquid 3D Printing System Is 25 Times Faster, i would deffo get one of these when the prices drop

When do you plan on building? I'm in no rush to buy one so may hang on until you are up and working. I can't find any reviews of an Aliexpress bought kit 3d printer so would be nice to get a DF review

    Don't hold your breath mate.
If I could just pull my finger out I might actually enjoy putting it together !

I'll post a stage-by-stage update when I do get going though.

There's 200+ pages of feedback for the aliexpress printer right at the bottom of the page but not proper product reviews. Any 'prusa i3 acrylic' review should give you a idea in the meantime.

    Thanks to chizh

    Resurrecting this old thread.

Unboxed and built my Prusa i3, as above, over the last week. The UPS customs invoice is date 5th July last year, so it's taken me a whole year to build
Was pretty straight forward TBH and took a little over 6 hours with the wiring taking the last hour or 2. Turns out the supplied videos didn't show the full wiring process which is actually better described by 2 photos that were also included on the DVD. There was a few other omissions from the videos but once you're in the build groove it's pretty easy to figure out.

Anyhoo, the final build looks like the photo below. Levelling and setting up things post-build has taken half as much time again just to get something half decent to print / stick to the bed.
