Rant People who know nothing about computers

I'm sure all of us know people who know fa about computers and keep begging for help.

I got roped into reloading windows on a desktop belonging to someone I know. Did a very nice job but took my time and gave it back to him about 10 weeks later.

I think he's learnt to ask others for favours now

Saw him today and he was saying he got his laptop sorted - screen wasn't powering up but it now is. No more details of the actual problem apart from it wasn't working, he gave it to someone and now it is working.

Anyway he wanted to check a price with me just to make sure he wasn't being ripped off so I thought I would see how much he paid so I could try and guess what was done from that and see if it sounded sensible.

    The repair cost him £20

Even if the person just switched display from external to internal, he did his job and tbh if I was trying to make a living out of fixing computers, I think my minimum charge for any job would have to be higher than £20.

I know what you mean. I have been called out on some ridiculous things.

Taskbar vanished? No you somehow managed to drag it from the bottom to the top.. solution = Look up!
No Internet, when you get there they couldn't check lotto results online.
Laptop not working when I turn it on it just hangs. No you deleted icons off desktop.
and the one we have all had. Printer stopped working. When did it stop working? After I hoovered the spare room. Plug it back in then.

My min is £25 but thinking of increasing it to help stop stupidity.

Also had some stupid cow plug the old PS/2 connector for keyboard into the old round network connector before RJ45. They weren't even the same size ffs.

I don't bother anymore. I used to do a bit for a few extra quid but gave up. I fixed a mate of a mate's computer as a favour (basic virus removal so no big deal) then started getting random calls off the twat at all hours asking me to talk him through sorting out computer problems for his mates. Get fucked cheeky twat.

I just help family only, made sure I back up all their HDD, and I keep the images. But the times I do help others I do for free or home cooked meal.

But its getting worse, as ppl getting lazy in basic maintenance of a computers or never learn.

I used to do it for loads of morons when I lived in my hometown in Teesside as everyone thought I was good.
Now I live in London, anytime friends ask me if I know anything about computers I always say no.
    Best thing I ever done.

I had a woman today (who i've done work for in the past) come round and say she hasn't got Excel on her laptop. the laptop i set up with Win7 and MS Office about 4 weeks ago.

She switched it on and said showed me a spreadsheet. "See i don't have Excel"

    - eh? - that's Excel you've just opened up you divvy!

Then she said "oh well my friend said there should be 4 sheets in the workbook but there's only one, look.!"

So i maximised the sheet with one click... and there were the three other tabs!!! FFS!

I worked in a computer shop for the first 3 years of moving back to CY. I would get random calls off a customer who I didn't even remember, but he spoke to me like we were best friends so I always pretended to know who he was. I helped him over the phone dozens of times out of sheer embarrassment, even a good year after I had left the shop. I still don't know who the cunt was.

For the more elderly members of my family I now recommend the same thing.. A Chromebook. For what they want to do, it is perfect.

I have also thrown in the towel helping people and moving from up north to down south 6 years ago was so liberating to not get hassled to fix a fucking PC.
I few people did offer to post them down for me to fix at first but told them no, not interested.

Recently tho the word has started to spread again thanks to the mrs. I am charging a minimum £40 and any virus problems (i.e. everyone one without fail) the only thing I offer is wipe, OS and driver install - no software, not even dodgy windows.

Worst thing if we consider how many hours the actual windows install takes, how long to download all the right drivers, then update everything (ignoring anything else that is part of the job).

Suddenly a skilled job pays less than minimum wage

Being the only tech savvy person in a family is a cunt.

What's worse, my father often rings asking for advice, which I provide knowing full well the twat will ignore most of it then ring again asking for more advice.

He had a complete failure once

"All the lights are on but nothing is happening, I've got no picture or anything! What did you do to it last time you fixed it?!"

    "Dad, the monitor on?"

I remember convincing my dad to switch to Firefox as a broswer. He used Internet Explorer before and was always used to click the blue E to get online

I had to change the Firefox icon to a internet Explorer icon and rename Firefox to be 'connect to Internet ', as he just couldn't get used to using Firefox... Ffs

Almost everyone at work double-clicks hyperlinks. I dare not tell them they only have to click once because I know they'll be at my desk asking why when they click an icon once like I said, 'the internet doesn't work...' .

Been there done it all, from setting up routers that don't work on new years day (after the NYE party) to the guy whos pc was dead and not working, I asked him to check the power cable was connected at the back and swap it with the one for the monitor, He couldn't see due to it being dark so I asked him to turn the light on or get a torch which he couldn't as they were in the middle of a power cut.

Built PC's for people and 7 years down the line the pc is still in use and slow, compared to the laptop they just bought and would like it to be made faster so a price for new insides quouted and build time and asked why so much.

I still get them at work but I have to be polite and not take the piss out of them.

never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups!
