Default Vista to 7 upgrade advice please.

My desktop is currently running Windows Vista Home Premium SP2 64bit and i think its time to upgrade to 7.

However, there is years worth of settings, installed programs (some paid for, some not) and i have the pc runninb the way i like it. Will Microsoft Office still work? I rely on Word and Outlook.

Will a new OS flatten everything? Or will an upgrade move everything over too?

Lastly, any links to the best place to buy the upgrade software?

    Ta!

Personally I would reformat and do a clean install. It will run faster and be more reliable if all the clutter is removed. I normally take a screen shot of my desktop and my programs list so that I can see what programs I was using before. Maybe a few months down the line I would need a simple freeware program, to rename files for example, and a quick look at the list or desktop image I created before the clean install will tell me what I have used in the past.

Whether you are upgrading or not you should always have a backup of your favourites/bookmarks and everything else like photos and documents you can't really afford to lose anyway. If not then it's something you need to do now whether you do a fresh install or an upgrade.

Unless its something really specialised most of the software you will need is available from the usual sources on an 'extended' trial basis. (">

If you have a spare hdd , install 7 to that ,so you can fall back till you get everything sorted on 7 ,
just use f2 on boot , and select the drive .

Good idea. That's what I did when I went from XP to Win7. Whenever I wanted to do something that wasn't installed on Win7, and didn't have time to grab the latest version for installing on there, I would select the old drive during boot up and have my old system back up to get the job done. Windows Vista and running the way I like it do not deserve to be in the post!
