Default Xbox one controller range = poor

Recently upgraded the Xbox 360 to a One and I'm finding the controller range very poor. With the 360 I could use the controller anywhere in the house (the picture gets sent up and downstairs via a HDMI splitter). However the Xbox one controller hardly works at all up stairs.
Anybody know of a way to extend the range? It's only going about 15" but through a wall and floor, but as said the 360 controllers worked fine. Seems a big step backwards IMO and I might actually consider the PS4 route instead.

not sure on how to extend the range but me and a friend have the same problem also, I think its just the case the xbox one controllers have less range, The new proprietary protocol—to be clear, it's not WiFi nor Bluetooth, but I guess its higher up the frequency scale to allow higher bandwith hence shorter distance

Seems a step backwards to me. Not even bothered about the headset crap on the controller, how many people have the issue because there 'media center' is in a media cupboard? Googling shows a lot of people are having the same issues.

Have you updated the controller from the xbox one? this seemed to fix some connection issues I had when the xbox first out.

Plug controller in goto devices> COntrollers and update (something like that anyway)

Yep, everything updated, also tried re syncing the controller but still wont work reliably upstairs. If I put the controller on the floor it works but that's no resolution.
