Are you grounding yourself while you do it?

i didnt when installing the CPU, ram and m.2 drive. kept the MOBO in its box while i done it. rookie error

even though I have bought a grounding strap and anti static gloves..... forgot about them until i saw them at the bottom of the box

edit: did keep touching my laptop which was beside me though...

Believe it or not but a static shock from a human can carry upto 3000 volts. Not a typo. it does us no harm because of fuck all amps I believe but it would fuck a motherboard in a heartbeat.
I did the exact same thing yesterday. Finished the build and looked at the anti static strap on the table and thought oh fuck.

All good though. Finished and up and running :-)

I shouldn't say this because the next one is bound to then fail but it's so easy to build a pc these days. I've been doing it for over 20 years and only had one that didn't start first time. That was a long time ago. These days all parts and cables are designed to only fit in one orientation so it's not possible to plug them in wrong. Even all those fiddly case plugs tend to come as one single combined plug these days on decent cases.

You're right. Did entire new build yesterday in about an hour. New everything. 20 years ago that would have been a very different story. It's all the software that takes forever now.
As CMG said above CPU installation is now nothing. I used to shit myself doing those. You literally could not fuck it up now.

It's been that way a fair few years now, maybe I've just been unlucky or careless.

Best to be overcautious, you'll be really annoyed if you switch it on and something is dead.

is the best way to ground the pc to install/mount the PSU, and just have it turned off at the wall?

then simply attach wrist strap and good to go?

Dunno, not sure how plug sockets work, switching it off might also cut off the ground wire? I always just connect to the unpainted metal of a radiator or something.

    Thanks to Mule

Safest bet is to remove all anti static straps . Make sure are wearing nylon underpants then rub an inflated balloon on the top of your hair before you start.

    Always works for me.

The Ground pin on any socket should be connected to all screws holding the front plastic bezel on. Switching off the mains should have no affect whatsoever on the Ground, that should always be grounded.

You can get testers for checking the ground connection!
