Default Building your own gaming pc

So I'll have a budget of about £1500 soon and I'm looking to build my own gaming pc, as high a spec as poss to run games on ultra and also be future proof for a while...

I know there are countless Google results on this topic but I'd rather hear from you computer savvy lot :-)

What's the very first thing I should be doing? What mistakes should I not make etc? Which brands are best etc....

I would like to stick with an i7 processor and nvidia graphics as those are the models and makes I've used in previous laptops and desktops in the past. But actually building my own from scratch is something I have zero to no knowledge of doing....

SSD drive for the OS Crucial drives are good, then a decent speed storage drive, gigabyte do gaming boards min 16gb ram best graphics card you can budget though look at http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html as the top end (most expensive isnt always the best card) make sure your case can breath with a 700+watt PSU

    thats the basics anyway

ps. £1500 budget is way more than you should need, my current machine and has been for 15 mths is a 8 core AMD 16gb ram ssd os drive 3 x 2 tb storage with a GTX960 GPU cost me £700 to build inc case mobo ram psu etc

    Thanks to consoles

I don't think it's worthwhile building your own any more. If you are going to, I'd buy a decent spec pre-built PC and upgrade it as you feel is necessary. Then you can sell any removed parts.

For me, it isn't always necessarily about price, there's just something cool about having a table full of boxes and putting it all together.

AMD have released the new R9 390x series which reviews very well. Can cope with some at 4k, although I think that's overkill to be fair.

I've been using hyper x fury RAM for the past year or so and am very impressed with it.

As for CPU, I've never been an Intel man so not best placed to advise. As others have mentioned though, SSD for OS will make a difference to day to day use.

Yeah, but there's always one bastard component that won't work.

Older I get the more cool it seems to just pay other people to do stuff for me, sure I can put a pc together but I would rather just pay a little more to get somebody else to do it for me.

My one small tip is to use large fans, they don't spin so fast so are less noisy.

Been looking at either a i5 6600k or a i7 6700k processor and apparently there isn't much difference between the two.. Apart from the price

Also tempted to go for a Geforce titan x graphics card or the 980ti........

Go for mid range stuff, high spec equipment isn't markably better and will lose value quickly.

I built an i5 base system up for about 600 quid about a year ago, had plans on building a more budget system but after checking reviews on most of the components it seems that the sweet spot for power : cash seemed just higher than my targets but in actual fact I ended up with a pretty meaty rig for less than I expected. It runs Crysis and Bioshock smoothly at 1440p, but to be honest I haven't tested it with much else.

You wont need i7 for gaming, i7 is aimed at power hungry desktop applications, not gaming.

I'd say build your own, even if it is a hassle and barely any cheaper, doing the research and build for me is pretty entertaining and drags me slightly back to being up to date with the state of current hardware. Back in the athlon axia days I knew motherboards and gfx cards pretty well, but these days its just a mass of meaningless numbers to me so any little insight is like growing my balls again.

Always been an AMD man, and I could be wrong but sure i've read the latest games are now written to take advantage of more cpu cores, intels have less cores but faster, were as Amd have more cores so more efficient for the latest games, the GPU has to be the top of the list in your budget tbh,

Consoles.... Looks like a decent build but I reckon swap out the motherboard for an Asus ROG hero and a i5 6600k...... Too much of a woose to shy away from Intel

You've not mentioned the type of games that you want to play or the resolution that you intend to play them at. Does your budget include the cost of a new monitor[s]? I play a lot of racing/flight sims, for instance, with a multi-monitor setup - 23"|29"|23" - & Nvidia gpu's don't support mixed monitor set ups.

    Here are two examples:
    Ultra Wide 3440x1440 (4.9 megapixels) 34" Monitor/DPI - 109
    lg-34um95c-34-ultrawide-ips-monitor-34um95c-p £530.00
MSI NVIDIA GTX 970 GAMING Twin Frozr 5 Graphics Card - 4GB £275.00
    Intel Core i5 6500 Skylake £157.00
Asus Z170-P Intel Skylake Crossfire £90.00
    Crucial MX200 SATA 3 250 £72.00
    Toshiba DT01ACA300 3TB £67.00
    Corsair 16GB (4x4GB) Vengeance LPX £87.00
    Corsair 200R case £50.00
    Corsair CP-9020048-UK CX 600W Power Supply £53.00
    Total £1,381.00

    4K 3840x2160 (8.3 megapixels) 28" Monitor/DPI - 157
    6GB MSI GTX 980 Ti GAMING 6G Twin Frozr 5, PCIe 3.0, 7096MHz GDDR5, GPU 1178MHz, Boost 1279MHz, Cores 2816, DP/HDMI/DVI £550.00
    Asus PB287Q 4K Gaming Monitor 1ms £309.00
    Intel Core i5 6500 Skylake £157.00
Asus Z170-P Intel Skylake Crossfire £90.00
    Crucial MX200 SATA 3 250 £72.00
    Toshiba DT01ACA300 3TB £67.00
    Corsair 16GB (4x4GB) Vengeance LPX £87.00
    Corsair 200R case £50.00
    Corsair CP-9020048-UK CX 600W Power Supply £53.00
    Total £1,435.00

to be honest im not that up to date with resolutions on monitors these days, all i know is that i want to play the latest games...Black ops 3, assassins creed, dying light, tomb raider, etc...

my budget wont initially include a monitor - ill do some seperate research on that, buts its not a priority...

another question i had was with regards to graphics cards... for example i know i may want the nvidia 970 or 980, but there are some many brands of the same card, gigabyte, MSI, EVGA, Asus - whats the difference except from the brand? is there ones i should avoid and one that is recommended?

The cheapest ones will be poor quality chips that will work fine but won't be up to quite the same speed as the faster ones. The more expensive ones are probably pre-clocked and have the cooling to cope with it. The mid priced ones should be exactly what they're supposed to be, no more or less.
