Question Apple TV1 - Update or bin and get a new media player

    Guys,

I've just found an Apple TV 1 than I put in a box more than a year ago. It has XBMC 13.1 on it but I cannot get the thing working at all - none of the add-ons seems to be working.

Right, the questions is, can the box be updated to the latest version of KODI and is it difficult to do? Or, should I just lob it into the nearest bin and get one of the multi-core android boxes advertised on eBay?? They already have everything installed and I presume work without much pain.

I've also been looking at the Intel stick PCs, which would allow me to surf the net, watch KODI and stream iPlayer straight to my TV. Thoughts on these devices?

I certainly wouldn't throw it, they still hold some value, even if it is to offset some cost of a new box.

The android boxes that come pre loaded are a tad expensive, considering the build on them taken 5 minutes to set up yourself. With the support of the forum here and Youtube, you'll be able to install Kodi (14.1/14.2 - heard that v 15 and v16 beta have some issues) and then install either your own add ons or a pre made build.

I personally use a FireTV stick, but thinking of upgrading to a Fire TV box for ethernet purposes at some point. Although, many of my friends use these boxes and have terrific results from them.

I've no experience of the INtel sticks, so can't help there, but looking at eBay, ATV 1 do sell for £25+. Most of the listings do mention Jailbroken on kodi 15, so it does appear possible that you can update it, these sell for £100+

Thanks BB. I'll have a look at installing KODI 14.1/14.2 but to be honest, I tried and failed yesterday, just after my original post! I'll have a scan of Youtube to find another method. I suppose that most people have moved on from ATV1s now and there seems to be little activity/info around them.

The Intel sticks do seem a good option - basically turn your TV into a big PC and running KODI, iPlayer, Netflix, etc. would be a breeze. Cheap enough too.

Jay, You can use BB's guide but here is the one I used on my ATV1. I'm an IT clown and I managed it with no issues at all!

    1. Get a pen drive, go here and select which operating system you are using on the computer you will be putting the USB stick in - http://www.tvaddons.ag/osmc-kodi/
    2. Download the version you need, plug the USB stick into your PC and run the downloaded program, OSMC.
    3. When it opens up, select language and the machine you want to install it on. Finally select version (2015.10-2USB) and 'on a USB stick'.
    4. Once everything is loaded onto the USB stick, insert it into your ATV1 and switch it on. Just go through the usual yes/no during installation and initial setup.
    5. On completion of installation, install the Fusion Installer by following the guide here - http://www.tvaddons.ag/fusion-installer-kodi/
    6. Finally, use this link to the Configuration Wizard guide to set up your machine - http://www.tvaddons.ag/config-wizard-kodi/ - That's it!!
    7. Any ATV related issues? Go directly to the ATV1 forum for advice or information - http://forums.tvaddons.ag/apple-tv-1-discussion/
    8. General KODI info is here - http://forums.tvaddons.ag/

I just wish that Australia had decent internet speeds. I've gone from 76Mb in the arse-end of the UK to about 6Mb in a city of >2 million people. Damn mobile phone is shite too!
