Default Netflix clamping down on VPNs

Guess it's not that difficult to do for them. Surprised it's taken this long. Wonder how many subs they will loose doing this...

Video-streaming giant Netflix has said it is going to stop subscribers from using internet proxies to view content not available in their home countries.Due to licensing agreements, Netflix content varies between countries - many users have a virtual private network (VPN) or other proxy to get round this.

I use the US and UK sites on different media players and noticed a new 'update' to terms and conditions a few weeks ago, click ok to accept. Thought this was what it's about. Tbh, if they lock me out, I don't care. More options out there now.

The CEO of Netflix only last week said how it was damn near impossible for them to police this.

"We do apply industry standard technologies to limit the use of proxies,” (Netflix chief product officer Neil) Hunt says. “Since the goal of the proxy guys is to hide the source it’s not obvious how to make that work well. It’s likely to always be a cat-and-mouse game. [We] continue to rely on blacklists of VPN exit points maintained by companies that make it their job. Once [VPN providers] are on the blacklist, it’s trivial for them to move to a new IP address and evade."

Now this week they are trying to back away from this statement. It is the content makers (the Studios) that are trying to get Netflix to sort this.

Whatever Netflix try to put in place, the ability to circumvent will be sorted in a day or two. I will give this the attention it deserves.

Move along - nothing to see here.

Ditto.. been using netprotect/unlockus and lost multi region recently. Looks like they've removed all mention of netflix from their sites as they don't see a way round it.

Still up and running here with Iron Socket. Some of their regions were blocked but I informed them and within 24 hours they were back up.

I don't use Netflix, but I do use this. Which I believe works with Netflix and various other region locked services. Nice Kodi addon too.

I haven't had any problems with mediahint. I sometimes get a proxy detected message but I just turn off and on the plugin then reload the page and it works.

Pity. Perhaps your account is 'tagged'. See below.

Unblockr have been sending me emails regarding Netflix recently. Looks like Netflix are going all out!

    Hi All,

So we were right. Netflix are tagging accounts that flick between regions. Unblockr does not do any region swapping. We direct all netflix to the US only. So the majority of you should be OK. Those people who only ever use Netflix US with our service, should not get tagged by Netflix. Those that use Netflix on multiple devices some accessing the UK and some accessing the US may see they get the Proxy Blocked message.

This is done on an account by account basis. It seems to reset itself after 24hrs. At present there is not much we can do about it, as its not Unblockr that is being blocked. Your account is being tagged and this is out of our control....for now.

There is a way around it, but it comes at great cost to our bandwidth, and to be honest, no provider should really be doing it. If you see another provider stating they can get around Netflix blocking, it will be at a cost to the quality of the stream the busier their service gets.

We will continue to keep our ear to the ground. In turn keep us updated on your findings. Together we will keep the internet free of restriction.

    Regards

    Unblockr

Just tried my mediahint set up and it doesn't seem to be working either, getting the proxy detected message. I used to be able to disable it, re-enable it and it would work again but that hasn't helped this time. I'll have a more detailed look later. Anyone else use mediahint ?
