Things change, no one stays at the top for ever. DF was timed beautifully through social integration and a fine mix of people, that'll never be replicated.

Nothing last forever on the Internet.

With lack of regular signups with any substance, that's gonna happen.

A lot of members, who won't admit it, have been persuaded over the dark side. I fucking hate Facebook, but it's too large to ignore now.

Looking through historic posts, it seems like their used to be some characters. Should bring some of them back as fuel to troll!

But as DejaVu has stated, too many people have jumped ship to Facebook etc.. I refuse to sign up to it as i am not interested in what my mum had for breakfast and I really don't want my sisters friends all liking my posts when I have never ever met them.
It annoys me when people meet up with friends in the pub only to discuss what they have already posted days ago on Facebook. The other party then responds with 'Yeah I saw that on your Facebook' ??!!

It could happen that pubs might be then next ones to take a hit for footfall.. What is the point of meeting up if you already know everything about that person and more from Facebook..

Makes me think that society has already been here before. You know those lonely old fella's in your local 'spoons, we will all become them one day. Why bother meeting up with people when you already know the workings of their farts from social media.

Most (not all) new members are just spammers or dicks, it's hard to get good quality people anymore, that's how i see it anyway.

You are now also at the point a majority of users are using phones and tablets and as good as forums can look on them they are not as integrated as Facebook and Google plus are, this forum is not alone most forums have been on the decline for years with very few exceptions, the net has moved on as has the user base on it now and it seems to me they are a very lightweight user more interested in a funny cat video or what their friends had for tea wanting instant answers to questions without engaging or contributing.

There may be a time in future forums have a revival I hope so but as it stands they have a bleak future.

I have no clue about the legal side of forums and the linking of content that the authorities of a given country start arresting/suing people. So with that said I think the next wave of forums who are successful will simply be one's which host or link to content that would get you normal facebook/forum user in trouble. I know a few of you guys know the law behind all this so maybe you can correct me on these thoughts. Could a forum hosted say oversees or whatever get away with more in terms of "naughty" stuff or have the days where we used to talk about modding this/hacking that really over for ever ?
When a person wishes to discus certain things say a satellite providers encryption for example - at the moment you would be better placed learning spanish and heading over to forums based on their language to even begin to learn about such things.
Like I say I have no idea of the legal side of these things but do wonder how some forums chat all day about subjects that we could not even make 1post about without the board owners getting grief.

It's not just Facebook, but Google and the like as well. I'm pretty sure I read a post on here just the other day asking a question about something or another. What was the first answer? "What does Google say?".

Not very community spirited, but it is indeed just quicker and easier to find all you need from a quick Google search. Who needs a forum eh.....?

I'll keep reading the dwindling number of new posts every lunch time like I have done for the last 13 years (Jesus!) and even posting from time to time, but to be honest, it's kinda more out of habit now. Shame.

I'd say Twitter and the way you can get instant news is a huge contributor to the decline of forums.

Still prefer the forum community vibe myself. Hate facebook and only have an account as it is usually the fastest way to get hold of some people. Have twitter but not even logged in for about 2 years. Don't have any other social media.

Was using forums since the very beginning and I always will. Instant news is one thing but discussing and debating it on a forum is much better imho

Time for the nagra3 hack to be released...

Lack of a new hack of any kind maybe. Stuff is too underground these days and the actions of a few in the past have taught people to keep good things close to their chest.

Facebook does need killing though. Who's with me?

Said it before but members and the world are different to what they were 10/20 years ago. Forums now aren't as much of a part of it.

Same here. Only have facebook because its handy for selling stuff locally and can keep in touch with some ex-work friends who I would lose touch with. Only got two dozen friends on there and they are people I actually know to talk to in real life. haven't added relatives because I don't want to get involved in their petty squabbles on there. Had a twitter account for a few years but been two or three years since I logged in. I'm happy with DF. I feel good when I've helped someone and sometimes when I need help there is always someone here with good advice. (">

tbh I think all the old style members who would spend hours working out hacks etc then sharing have moved on in life leaving the folk who liked to be spoon fed to use other means for the information they want.

    just my view.

Facebook in my opinion. Forums I have used in the past have dwindled to not being used at all while there are facebook groups with all the forums most frequent users getting loads of use.

I think DF inspires some trust between members.
    Facebook doesn't.
That's why I have no facebook account. I just don't trust it.

Default what has happened to DF

Funnily I'd trust some longer term members on DF more than a friend of a friend type selling/buying scenario on Facebook and 100% more than some scroat on eBay or gumtree ,

Twatter never used for years and I find I do try and find info out of the web first before asking here

I think one big change is more specialised forums for each topic but always a lot less banter than on DF

I still visit fair few forums such as
    CS
    Plex stuff
Mobile when not in head [emoji16]
    Vix team
    Shooting
    Watch
    Knife
    Hunting
    Detailing

    So most my hobbies stuff

But where and when possible I do talk about those on DF also

People on DF often much more helpful and that's a bonus when it's an issue DF is invaluable usually
guess we all just have to chip in and help

Anyone think there's stuff DF should cover but doesn't ?

All the DF members with time severed status will have read variations of the OP question several times over the years.

The fact then when the occasion arises we are still able to banter, assist and troll each other keeps me returning.

Tapatalk has a lot to answer for. I hardly use a PC at home anymore. Tapa talk access is now garbage. It's just cumbersome to use. Forums have just become old fashion. Plus we are now mainly grumpy old men. We will still be here for a while though.
