Iphone 4s upgrade killed wifi

Hi Guys
My next door neighbour has an Iphone 4S and she did recent apple upgrade, as soon as phone rebooted WIFI is gone, greyed out and cannot be turned on. I did some searching online and it seems that the recent upgrade causes the WIFI chip on 4S to overheat and require a reball and many many people had same issue.
My neighbour went into local Apple store and they said that you cannot expect it to last forever and saying that if it were her car she wouldnt expect it to last forever - She doesn't but if she brought it into the main dealer for a service and they emptied 2kg of sugar into the tank and said you got to now buy a new one it would be illegal.
Any ideas what she can do? or a cheap replacement? she is very used to IOS but this has dented her faith in the fruit related brand.

I would probably start by contacting Apple again and pleading the case. Does she have insurance with her bank or contents cover? I imagine they would replace with a newer model.

You'd imagine wrong - Apple customer service is abysmal in my opinion - wifey has had a 3gs then 4 and currently a 5s with them - just before chrimbo her phone started switching off at random - quick Google revealed it was a known issue - checked her imei on the online checker confirmed it was part of the recalled batch made an appt at Metro centre apple store on boxing day as it was the earliest appt available - turned up to be told because her handset was out of warranty the recall didn't apply and we'd have to pay for the repair - tried speaking to the manager and complaining about making us waste most of our boxing day in a crowded shopping centre to be told they were refusing to honour the recall as it was out of warranty (over 12 months since she bought it) - complete cunts in my experience and glad she's now moving to android - sooner those backwards thinking money grabbing twats go the way of Nokia the better

Common fault...Apple??? You must be mistaken because Apple don't do faults. If you don't believe me ask all the Apple fanboys out there in the world. Wont be hard to find them. They will be the ones with their arses in the air and their heads buried in the sand. (">

That's a very poor show from Apple. I recieved fully paid for recall work on my car from Mitsubishi. Must've been about 13-14 years old at the time and an import too.

Thanks for reply, unfortunately not easy for 60+ year old lady recovering from Breast cancer and I have never reflowed anything in my life - either with rework station or with Hair dryer.
I already looked into this and struggled to justify the costs for her against her 4s when damage was caused by apple upgrade.
Thanks anyway for advice.

I agree, if the update fucked it Apple should help

I'm pretty sure you have a minimum 2 years warranty on products like this as part of EU law (Apple even had to amend their AppleCare wording) and if you buy directly from Apple apparently there are ways to be covered for something like 5 years but I can't remember the details, another consumer law thing I think.

Sort the carriage either way it will be around £16-17 special delivery if that helps and I'll sort it
