M.2 Drive for OS?

Anyone used an m.2 drive solely for their OS? For my gaming build I plan on using this one:

Cheap as chips, and my mobo supports an m.2 slot.

Just wondered what other peoples opinions are of them?

I did a build for a local Photographer using an M.2 for the OS drive also using a 120GB drive (against my recommendations) within a couple of months he regretted it as he was always having to move stuff around cos 120GB was just not large enough.

You might think Windows will only take up 60GB or so (and it should).. not the case when you get a Windows application using lots of GB for swap/cache e.t.c

For OS drive honestly would look for a larger one. He had to upgrade to a 240GB within 3 months.

To a degree it does depend what programs you use. He uses Photoshop a lot which is a greedy fucker but so are many other programs.

Edit: Yes I know you can install programs to the other partitions but they all still clog up the OS partition usually with hard to find tmp/swap/cache bollocks.

Have to agree with piggy. Recently built a PC too and I stuck a 120gb in after sticking a few Autodesk programs on I'm out of space now. [emoji30]

There is another technique which works for some people:

Have an SSD for Windows and programs. Have a big HDD for storage. Relocate all the user profiles to the HDD (needs a little regedit).

Say for example the photography guy may not be keen on that, as he would lose the advantage of having the photos stored on the SSD which would slow things down. However for a normal user that may have their user profile mainly filled up with films downloaded of the net, it's not a big deal as you wouldn't want the film running faster anyway.

well my plan is this:

x 1 M.2 120gb Drive solely for OS and programs
x 2 WD Red NAS 3tb drives for media, movies, series etc
x 1 500gb SSD for gaming installs...

It really isn't worth the hassle having a 120GB for an OS partition these days. Honestly you WILL regret.

have to echo the other lads, 120gb ssd wont last long I too went this route and 4 mths later was pissed of with having to clean up the drive every week

ps. when using a SSD make sure you enable TRIM

Are you building the machine from scratch? Take a look at NVMe drives, I am possibly replacing my laptop soon and if so will get one with NVMe and add a Samsung 950 Pro. There is a cheaper OEM version which runs hotter, I think it's the SM951.

Would definitely get the 250GB minimum then relocate your document folders to the second drive.

120gig SSD drive here and no problem with storage but I work pretty light these days. Photoshop, office and the usual. Photos and all other media on 1tb drives.

In the case of SSD drives though, I did see that in benchmarks, the same model/brand drive would generally perform better at 256gb and higher.

I have a 120gb SSD in my gaming laptop... and its boots up as fast as shit off a shovel, never really tend to max the drive space out as all my media and documents are stored on other drives. (My laptop supports 3 internal HD bays). One for OS, one for game installs, and another for downloads only....

get the SM951 NVME 256 one, your motherboard supports the lanes and the speed will open prgms like photoshop so much faster.

you have purchased a lot of quality items for the build, seems a shame to hold back now.

This is going to be mainly a gaming rig, but it will also side as a NAS - running plex, sabnzbd and sickbeard in the background. I dont imagine I'd use the build for a great deal of photoshop - prob use my gaming laptop for that...

Those new m.2 Samsung drives are amazing! Not long got one myself 2500mbps read speed is absolutely crazy! I'd recommend to anyone... It is abit lame only having 512gb but that's what extra ssds are for! :-P

I got the 950 Pro 512GB in the end and it is amazing, only went for the 512 as the benchmarks were better than the 250.

I just changed out my Revo 8 for an Intel I5 Nuc, it's about the size of an Apple Tv, no internal fan and therefore no dust and shit to worry about. Installed a Kingston m.2 120gb and 4gb stick of ram, the speed is incredible ! boots within 15 seconds and all apps fly ! all my media/entertainment stored on 2tb drive on my network, so the 120gb drive on Nuc is ample to download a few films and tv series to watch and internet browsing from the armchair.
