This is the first time I've really paid any attention to the new VR stuff, but I have to admit this is very impressive, if utterly impractical.

Very impressive. Oculus should be shitting themselves imho
There's quite a few videos around now showing the Vive Pre (which is basically the consumer edition but was given pre release to various media outlets and vloggers)
I've yet to see a bad review, in fact quite the opposite. Even reviewer has been blown away by the immersion the Vive seems to offer. I just hope it's not being overhyped. I've purposely stayed clear of Google Cardboard and Gear VR so I'm hoping the Vive lives up to my expectations.
Roll on the 5th April.
Never really seen any of these, I suppose the PC needed will be top of the range gpu etc?

Am just waiting for release and reviews before ordering one of these - pretty sure I am going to get one but at the price point want to make sure it works properly etc on release before jumping in.
Let's be honest, after the initial WOW factor VR headsets will end up in a drawer gathering dust. Much like 3D TV's really.
I think at 600 quid, its priced out of the limits of the average consumer and as such its not going to gain much traction. That's not to say its not worth 600 quid mind.
Game developers have enough issues meeting deadlines and budgets already without going into adding even standard VR support, let along this room immersion stuff.
It'll be a great toy for pissing about, but I cant see it changing gaming for the foreseeable future.

I'm not sure I agree. Gaming probably won't be the killer app for VR. It goes way beyond that. Agreed, the initial high costs will mean it's not going to be mass market, but neither are the Tesla Roadster, Model S or Model X. And I see VR following the same trajectory as Electric cars. Elon Musk makes no secret of the fact that the high price currently being paid for their cars is paying for the R&D for the upcoming Model 3. The Model 3 will be mass market and Musk is so confident he's building a $5billion factory to build the batteries for the 500k Model 3's he's going to sell every year.
Facebook have made a $2billion+ bet on VR and Mark Zuckerberg thinks it's going to invade lots of spaces, including social media, travel, conferencing, ecommerce, sports and any other kind of entertainment you can think of. In five years time, when VR has matured a little, the technology will have advanced to the stage where a headset like the Vive will cost no more than an Xbox Controller.
And one final thought, VR, for me, is one of the most plausible solutions to the Fermi Paradox. Why would you leave your home planet if you can live in perpetual bliss in whatever virtual world you choose? Granted, that's some decades away, but I think it's the inevitable future for the human species.
Have you read 'Ready, Player one'?
I just think that VR really needs to hit the ground running and it's already pricing itself out of the market. I know it's not necessarily just a gaming device but from what I've seen it's being pitched at that level. And most of the reviews I've read seem to imply that VR leaves you with a blinding headache after an hour or so. I hope I'm wrong though.
I think Augmented reality will be bigger the total VR immersion in the long run.
As I've mentioned in other threads about this, I think the biggest hurdle for this kind of tech is the nausea factor.
Peeps simply won't fork out that much cash just to puke (unless on a stag do) and the second the tabloids get hold of a juicy story, it could well be the final nail on the coffin (or the publicity it needs!).
Everyone's different of course, so it could well be that enough peeps remain unaffected for this to turn into the next big thing.
But trust me when I say, if you are one of the affected, it's bladdy horrible.
Now give me my fucking holosuite!
The nausea factor hasn't been an issue with the pre-consumer/consumer versions of Vive, or any of the headsets since they increased the refresh rate to 90hz. The dev kits were a lower refresh rate and they reckon that caused most of the motion sickness. It's been mentioned specifically in some of the previews of the Vive.
Got my shipping notification email this morning, so it's on it's way. Haven't seen a bad review so far, so I can't fucking wait.

What I would love to see is a drone with a 3d camera that connects with the hive or oculus. The camera could point the direction of the headset while the drone is controlled via a controller. Always wanted that superman feeling of flying.
