If you don't want to go down Bods route I would recommend a gen 8 micro server from HP then use this link to claim back £55

    https://www.serversplus.com/microserver_cashback

If you have the money fill with wd red drives, or fill it a bit at a time.

My gen 7 server is showing its age but still runs SAB,sonar and couch potato. All automated with plex media server.

    Hi
I 100% agree with moon, only question is which o/s?
I also updated my CPU to the holy grail Xeon e3 1220l v2. Which is only 17watt, low heat and can do virtualisation (but they are hard to find as it must be v2 and the L ).
Quite a few us using xpenology O/S, it's free and works very very well, however I am now not so keen on a hacked OS. I am currently considering Unraid or Rockstor or breaking the bank for a HP ROK of Windows server 2012 R2.

Thats what i was looking at a gen 8 they seem cheap enough but i like the gen 8 with the Xeon its a pretty big jump in price but if it really makes a difference I don't mind paying the extra .

Mine is similar to moonrat. HP N40L sits under the TV. Upgraded the videocard to plug into the TV but not necessary. SSD for Win8, the stock 250 used as download dump and 1Tb WD Green for main storage (Had it already and never bothered to upgrade.)
Sonarr & Sabnzbd plus Plex Server installed plus ideer Bluray player. Only other addition is Lights Out which wakes up each morning to allow Sab to grab last night's US TV etc and then hibernates until the evening ready to watch when the missus goes to bed.
Worked well for me for a few years now. Will quite happily feed the TV downstairs and the Roku upstairs.

    Thanks to chizh

Not so sure you need the Xeon upgrade to run just plex and the downloaders, I would try the G1610 first. Depends how many devices you plan on streaming to I guess.

    Hi
Correct, you don't but you do need for virtualisation should you wish to do this.

Very easy to upgrade the CPU in these, can be hard to source some of the procs but there are loads to choose from so you would get some of the iCores easily, it's some Xeons that are hard to find!

choosing a plex server depends what type of devices will be connecting to it and whether they can direct play the files you have ,if the server needs to do transcoding that's a cpu intensive task,
