Thunderbird seems ok but feels a bit dated. I'll have a look at outlook, which I haven't touched in years. Thanks everyone.

Everything is going well with my Surface now, no more sleep issues since the updates. It's running my car diagnostic software and hardware fine and I flashed my audi ecu with it this morning.

Only annoyance I've found so far is if you pull the keyboard off and use it like a tablet, when you put the keyboard back it doesn't always seem to recognise it first time, especially if waking from sleep - unless I'm missing a trick somewhere ? I also would like it to wake a bit quicker when you open the cover. iPad is up instantly, Macbook is usually about 2-3 seconds, Surface is more like 10-15 I'd guess.

Still very happy with it at the moment though and loving having a fully functional computer in a tablet.

It's interesting you mention this, as the exact thing happens to me whenever I use an IOS device!

Are we subconsciously compensating for inaccuracies in our tech?!

Had a day back on the MacBook yesterday for no particular reason other than it's what I picked up first. The MacBook screen is undoubtably better than Surface, but I'm back on the Surface this morning and it feels the more complete experience I was looking for. I think my gamble may be paying off.

So thinking out loud: chasing the carrot...if the surface pro 5 has a better screen, or Mac release a touch screen MacBook...then everything is sorted [emoji1]

The pro 4 screen isn't bad at all, it's just the 12" MacBook screen is phenomenal. A touchscreen lightweight Mac laptop would tick all my boxes but sp4 seems to be doing pretty good so far.

I was in a similar position, long time Apple user (iMac, Ipad Air, iPhone, 11" Macbook Air).
I bought the Surface Pro 3 with type cover last year. I'm not really sure, why I decided that I "needed" it, but I did .
Overall I find the opposite i.e the Macbook is the more "complete experience".
The Surface Pro is a great bit of kit, and I do like it BUT no matter how I try, I nearly always find myself reaching for the little Macbook. I'm in the my mid forties so the eyesight 'aint what it was, and although the macbook, has a smaller, inferior screen, somehow I can "see" it better.
I know that doesn't make sense, but some of the windows programs, I use seem to resize themselves into tiny fonts or I have to "drag" the page to get to some "OK" tabs etc. Nothing major, but somehow I associate the Surface Pro with a little fidgeting and the Macbook with a "just works", so I guess, I have been assimilated by Apple.

Part of the issue was probably the fact that the original OS was Win 8.1 which I never got my head around, and I haven't really got a chance to properly play with Windows 10.
I use the Pro for the likes of Vag Com, updating the dream box, messing with Kodi on Wetek etc.etc. but I am usually looking for chores for it, to justify my purchase, whereas the Macbook is my little friend, I take with me.

Yea i use my surface for vcds and nefmoto flasher and various immobiliser tools. Remapped my audi tt 225 with it a couple of days back, no issues. Still seems a bit weird not running power out to a car I'm remapping for the laptop but was all done and dusted in 5 mins flat.

Very impressed with battery life, I haven't measured it but it's got to be 8h+

I totally get what you're saying regarding the MacBook 'just working'. They do everything that they do with near perfect reliability. As I said, add a touch screen to the 2015 12" macbook and that's me happy.

I have a surface pro 4 from work. It has replaced my laptop. I have the 8gb mid range one.
At home I use it as a stand alone, at work I plug it into the new dock which is linked to dual monitors, key board and mouse through the single lead.

can't fault it, I use it simultaneously run Visual Studio 2015, SQL server and I have no issues developing.

fantastic replacement to my bulky laptop

I haven't experienced any slow down issues yet from the m chip but I do kinda wish I had sprung the extra for an i5 model. I didn't because the next model up they had in stock was the i7 512GB and I had money burning a hole !

4GB ram seems plenty at the moment. I've had multiple stuff open with multiple chrome tabs and it's been pretty zippy throughout. I'm learning to live with the few seconds wait for it to wake up and battery life has been great. Better than the iPad and about on a par with the MacBook I would estimate.

A couple of weeks on and I'm still really happy with my Surface.

I still haven't noticed any slow down or anything but still, as above do kinda wish I had sprung the extra for an i5/i7 model, just for future proofing.

I have only picked the macbook up once since using the surface and ironically that was to run a windows prog (in a virtual machine) I had on it that I couldn't find to install on the surface. iPad hasn't been opened once, so keep an eye on the BST for those ;-)

Also the macbook keyboard (which I adored) felt very weird. That was a side effect I didn't expect !

On a more useful note, I would highly recommend anyone who has one or anyone who knows someone who has one to get the most recent system update. Mine dropped a couple of days ago and it finally fixed the sleep/wake issues.

I was getting a situation where it wouldn't always wake from sleep on opening the cover and would need a press of the power button and it would wake as if it had hibernated. Usually this was happening if it had been asleep for more than a few hours, e.g. overnight I would always have to wake it with the power button, but the most recent update seems to have sorted this.

    cheers,

    malty

also point to remember if you have a dock, make sure to get "active" converters, passive will probably work for one monitor

for two monitors on my docking station i get a lot of flickering on a mini display to vga converter

Have had a while with the surface pro now and I really like it EXCEPT it pisses me off having to pull out the kick stand every time I want to use it, as 99% of the time I use it in laptop mode.

I think because of this I'm going to look for either a convertible laptop or a detachable tablet.

So far I've looked at the following but can't make a decision.

    Microsoft Surface Book (probably i5 8GB 256GB)
    Lenovo yoga 900 (i7 8GB 256GB)
    HP Spectre x360 (i7 8GB 256GB)
    Dell XPS13 touch enabled (i7 8GB 256GB)

Has anyone got any suggestions on these or others that might fit the bill ?

    Many thanks

All those are serious contenders mate.

Hard to separate them really. Aside from the obvious i5 vs i7. Which i wonder how much actual difference there will be.

Between the surface book and the HP for me. But the weird hinge on the surface would probably mean I'd stick with what you already have!

Well my initial reaction was just I'll go get a surface book but a chance chat with the rep from HP in a John Lewis laptop dept and he showed me around the Spectre which is a great spec and about 500 quid less like for like. If they had one in stock I might well have walked out with one. I searched and investigated it for the next couple of days and that's when the yoga pro and xps13 grabbed my attention. All of those three are around 1000-1200 for i7 6th gen whereas the book is 1600 for i5 (but the better model with a dedicated gpu.

I need to have a play with them all I think

Very much liking the Yoga 900 which in it's very top spec can come direct from the manufacturer with iris graphics, i7 6560, 16gb ram and 512gb ssd for £1300 (if you don't mind orange, which I don't - the silver one is £100 more)

That's masses of bang for my buck, double the ram of all the others plus double the ssd space.

Looking like the favourite at the moment...

Thought I'd update this, made a bit of a compromise, instead of the £1300 i7 6560 I bought the yoga 900 with i7 6500, 8GB, 256GB for £1099. The keyboard is taking some getting used to, I keep hitting home instead of delete and the right shift key is too small but other than that I think I've made the right choice.

Well, I'm digging up an old thread here but I have gone a bit full circle on this.

I got the Yoga 900 and it's a lovely machine BUT I was never really happy with it. It was fast and efficient and really powerful but just wasn't that "nice" to use.

I especially couldn't get on with the keyboard. I am a pretty quick typist but I couldn't get used to the layout at all. I kept hitting the wrong keys and then the delete button wasn't where I expected it to be and it was all a bit frustrating.

Anyway, I put up with it for about 7 months but also changed my iPad Pro 12" for an iPad Pro 9".

Thought that was it but then a couple of months back AO.com started selling off Surface Pro 4's (again the base M3 model) with a type cover and pen for £599 which is saving about £300 from retail. I had missed my SP4 from the moment I replaced it with the Yoga 900 so I ordered one.

It arrived and I was instantly more happy with it than I had ever been with the Yoga 900. It's several processor steps down, half the RAM, half the storage but I love it. I can touch type with virtually zero errors, the screen is gorgeous, it's more user friendly x 100 and in all a more pleasurable experience x 1000.

Sure, I'm not going to be doing any video editing or anything intensive but then again I never did with the Yoga anyway so it was probably overkill owning such a high spec machine.

That said, if I could get an i5 (or i7) surface pro 4 for a decent price I would go for it - but even though they have been superseded by a new model, they have held their retail price really high, sadly

    cheers,

    malty

I've been biding my time to get a new surface. I've had the surface 2 RT and loved it for nearly three years. The last kick in the teeth for me was ms pulling skype from RT.

Its still a great portable office 2013 unit and I still often use it for work when travelling and only need outlook and PowerPoint etc. HDMI out means it will slap in a projector or tv easy.

Nearly bought an unused surface pro 3 off eBay with keyboard and a docking station but I wasn't convicted enough and it went for £300. Top end one as well...

Still while there's no 'need' for it I will stay on the fence.

How do you find the battery life ? I'd like to upgrade to the i5 or i7 but I'm a bit worried about the battery life hit. The m3 one is fanless and lower power consumption and I'm really pleased with how long it lasts on battery. Not quite all day usage I'd say but not far off.
