    Advice search filter

Im doing a site to advertise caravans for hire and im wondering how to do a search filter so people can find what the attributes they are looking for.
Im using godaddys website builder if that makes a differance.

I want to filter things like pet friendly, area of park and such.

    How do i do it?

you need to create a database, so when people advertise their vans they tick each box which is relevant you can then create a search query on the site which uses that database.

Would I be able to do this on my pc to test it before I buy hosting to make sure it's working ok?

What I want to do is to have a visitor to search for dates then get all the accommodation that's available for them dates as well as offering others that maybe a couple of days either side.
Also have recommended vans put to the top of the results.
    How would it work.

Sorry for all the questions I'm new at this so trying to learn as I go along.

what have you come up with so far? I would imagine 2 tables (maybe 3) 1 for the caravans and another for the dates (3rd for the filter info, depends if you have a full list of filters or want to add more in the future)

Caravans get added to dates table when booked this way you can query the db to select all databases where not booked for the period selected and then check the filters too ;-)

    Thanks to akimba

I have come up with zilich so far. Trying to work out how to actually build one in the first place.
Im thinking this might be a bit much for me to work at but i got 3 years hosting so need to do it
What programs would be best for doing it?

each van is privately owned so i would need so way for the owner to fill the dates in themselves.

Its a pretty big venture for you to take on then with out much experience as you will need user control etc for the caravan owners to login etc.

I would prob use PHP if newbie, look for a sample db & user web access system and bastardise that ;-)

Hotscripts is a good start http://www.hotscripts.com/category/s...ipts-programs/

I not downloaded it but think something like http://www.hotscripts.com/listing/webid/ might be a good starting point as you are running something like an auction site people put caravans on to rent rather than sell tho?

Still none the wiser. Think I'll have to drop this idea. Do you know anyone that could do it for me and a rough price?

setting up a database does it just consist of an excel file with details in?
Think the date search is too much right now so just a argos style search filter where it would filter to things like as decking, pet friendly and central heating. Would want it to show a picture of the van and put recomended ones at the top.

    Hi BBShark,

You probably have a large problem if your website is built with Godaddy's Website Builder, it is aimed at newbies that do not require databases, etc to run. The other problem is if you want to move your website off Godaddy then you hit the 'custom' website building scripts, which you can no longer use.

Date searching is not that difficult, if you know what you are doing. In databases it is classed as a UNIX Timestamp.
MySQL is probably the best way to go, and parse it using PHP, at the moment the UNIX Timestamp is 1464613536 - this is equal to 05/30/2016 @ 1:05pm (UTC).

If you're wondering how the UNIX Timestamp was first started, then you will see there is a point in the future that will cause the UNIX Timestamp to stop, it will reach the end.

So, if you look at the above figure you will see that 1464613536 seconds have passed since Jan 01 1970. (UTC), this was the initial start date, and shows us the Unix Epoch which is the time in seconds.

The UNIX Timestamp stays the same regardless of where you are situated in the world, this also controls the order in which posts are sent to a database.

But, there is a very large problem with the current UNIX Timestamp, once it hit's January 19, 2038 it will cease to function, because it will hit the 32-bit 'overflow'. So, from now until that time, every single database will either need a way to convert the UNIX Timestamp, which will mean ALL scripts currently in use will need updating, or migrated to 64-bit systems as a temporary solution.

These days we all expect everything to go on working forever, but this is far from the truth! Everything has a lifespan.

It would be like me telling anyone, that the number '1' is not a real number - the actual fact is there is no number '1'. It only exists for humans to understand Mathematics easier, if you take the number '1' away, most of the world would be lost, the internet would shutdown, because of the way it was developed.

Developing scripts and writing databases, and the required formatted output can be expensive, you could ask over at TheAdminZone - their is coders there that may help you or try freelancer.com - but you have to post your entire projects and Freelancers will bid on the job.

    Just a few ideas!

    Thanks to Black Oracle
