Bitcoins are stored in wallets and you have a complex recovery code, if you lose that then it's gone. I believe you store the money in online wallets now.

One of the main concerns is authorities hold a lot of bitcoins which were in the Silk Road accounts, Bitcoin is a concern for governments/corporations so they could flood the market to kill the value at any time. I believe this is still the case, other than that they are generally seen as safe. If you are looking at any dodgy purchases then look at mixing.

ive never used Bitcoin, I may have used incorrect or outdated terminology but like you I learned a bit about it out of interest.

I thought about bitcoin mining a while back realised rather quickly that they only realistic way to get bitcoins is to buy them. I was looking at the hardware needed to do the mining, some years ago a decent pc could have done the job but now you need some extremely power hungry hardware - which isn't cheap.

Apart from the anonymity of bitcoin i can't see the benefit of it, unless you invest a lot of money into the hardware.

The idea of block chains on the other hand, which bitcoin uses, is very clever and going to be extremely useful in the future as a means of ensuring the integrity of data in all aspects of life. From how i've read it, (and put very simplistically) block chains can't be changed by one individual, any changes in the data have to be 'approved' by all users as the data can only be changed with all owners input, which is encrypted with their own private key.

As Bod says the technology is fantastic and block chain has some great uses and we are looking deeply at use where I work and could have far reaching effects. As far as bitcoins themselves go get a wallet and just enough currency to enable you to do what you need to and hen should anything happen you won't lose much. I noticed omgwtfnzbs has shifted to them.

It's a while since I used any, but I bought them from Localbitcoins.com by bank transfer, it was an easy enough process, although sellers tend to ask for verification, either a scan of your bank card or passport/driving license. Make sure you blank out any details you don't want them to see.

As far as wallets are concerned I used GreenAddress, it has a nice Chrome plugin too.

You will need cheap electricity to start off with as these run 24/7 and consume lots of juice.
There are many dedicated miners that you can ready purchase, but I watched this video below

    Spoiler:

was quite informative on how to make a rig yourself

And this is how to do it on a large scale LOL

A bit off topic but i've noticed that OMGWTFNZB's hits have plummeted in the last 3 weeks. I normally filter HD movies and see which ge tthe most hits for selecting downloads and they're only getting 5 or 6 hits per movie, whjereas 3 weeks ago the good releases would get upwards of 150 hits.

Is this related to the switch from bitcoin from Paypal?

I can see me having to re-learn torrents all over again when my subscription expires in July.
