    Advice TomTom or Garmin

    Hi,
Travelling "downunder" to NZ soon so need a satnav with world mapping. Currently own a garmin (UK and Western Europe) which is ok apart from the irritating way the spoken directions use the word TURN whether you are approaching a junction or a corner . I would prefer that the spoken directions differentiate by using TURN LEFT for a junction KEEP LEFT for a slip road or BEAR or remain silent for a corner.
Never had a TOMTOM so don't know what form of direction it uses. Can anyone suggest a suitable device. I am looking for the following functions:
    Suitable spoken directions
    POI importing
Possibility to EXPORT to PC the route followed
    Traffic monitoring
World wide maps with lifetime updates
ideally fairly compact and light for luggage

thanks for any guidance you may be able to provide

I would have been more inclined to help you if you had followed forum etiquette and made your first post in the new member section, to introduce yourself.

Otherwise you just come across as a leecher

I have a TomTom for work and a Garmin in my car, i would say the TomTom is marginally better and has most if not all of the requirements you have listed.

    What's your budget?

The best one i've used is the TomTom GO 6100 but it's £300, i think the cheapest ones start at £70

I also have TomTom Go on my Galaxy note 3, it works a treat and i use it now in my car instead of my Garmin, plus it is free if you know where to look

From my experience the TOM TOM would suit your needs best. The higher end models will do all you need. And as Ilscuro says there's plenty of options available regarding maps etc.

I'd vote for tomtom as well. I've been using it on an old jail broken iPhone 4s for years. Can upload what ever map or 'app' update. Plus i know how to edit the files to customise it to include speed cam pois (old skool) and customs voice etc. Old John Cleese

If you get a new Tomtom, look for a deal with free map updates as you cannot use any copied maps on the new devices. The older Tomtom's can be used with the correct copied maps (after patching).

    Thanks to Russ

Do you reckon they'd be do-able in the future Russ, or is it the beginning of the end like the old dboxes?

Agreed. I have TomTom and Garmin but Waze is the only thing that gets used. I love the way you can search for a company and it will look up the address for you. Also the live traffic is pretty sweet automatically rerouting if it gets bad.

I used to use Waze before i got a car with satnav last year.
I guess the issue for the OP would be data use when in NZ. and phone signal in some more remote parts.

In that case I'd suggest Here Maps available on Windows Phone, iPhone and Android. Worldwide free offline maps available.

Be careful buying a tomtom in Europe if you need traffic services in NZ, its not well publicised but the traffic services are split into regions European, North American, South African and Australasian when you register your device the services will be fixed to that region and wont work in others I found this out only when I went to Florida with my euro unit.

If you're going to the expense of hiring an RV have you considered getting a sat nav supplied with it? I know Hertz (N)everlost wasn't brilliant last time I used one a few years back but I'm sure the rental firm should be able to supply something

The new ones have been out for some time now - plenty of people trying to do them but none have succeeded yet - so I would guess it is very doubtful.
