I've got one similar but made by another brand although it looks exactly like it, I'll be honest it's shit.

It was hard to set up and quality wasn't great, I'm sure you'll be recommended a better one.

It kind of looks like it will work on its own, and email or ftp as long as there is a network connection... is this right? Do i need a dedicated dvr or laptop running this kit?

That's the one, you'll need somewhere to store the video so a NAS, PC etc.

Is it possible to use these POE cameras with homeplugs or do you need to run Cat 5 everywhere?

As long as you can inject power into the cat5 when it come through the power line adapter. Don't think they make a Poe power line adapter yet. But I have done it and works fine with my foscam

What do you mean inject power?

Are you saying that network cable from a powerline adapter to the camera would not work, but something would need to be done / added?

I've been looking and you would need a POE injector which would add power to the cable and camera.

Something like this would work coming out of the powerline adaptor.

I am very interested in the Arlo, but the issues I can see are that they are battery operated and not built for outdoor use. All other aspects e.g. cloud recording, alerts etc.. would really suit my purposes of watching the house whilst I am away on business or vacation.

Just surfacing this again, there are different lenses (2.8mm, 4mm, 6mm etc).

Im wondering what sizes people are using?

I want to cover the front garden area, about a saloon car's length.

Any ideas which would be best?
