Help External drive via usb not accessible

    Hey guys,

Got a drive here from someone to look at, it won't boot so I have it my ext caddy.

    Win7 says

g is not accessible access is denied

OK - so made myself owner and added full control etc.

Still receiving the same error though. What's confusing me is that malwarebytes can still scan it - it lists directory structure as it scans through the folders - so the drive IS accessible, just not to me.

    Any ideas?

I had this with an external hard drive in the past and it turned out to be a 'permissions' problem.

Can't remember exactly but it was along these lines...

    1. Right-click on the drive. Choose Properties.
    2. Click the Security tab.
    3. Click the button Advanced.
    4. Click the button Edit.
    5. Double-click on one permission entry.
    6. Give it full control right, and check the box “Apply these permissions to objects and/or containers within this container only”.

    Thanks to ilscuro

Thanks ilscuro - already done that bit. Properties say it's mine, but it won't let me access it.

Booted into safe mode, and I have full access - I've now done what I needed to do.

BUT I'd still like to get to the bottom of it before I wipe the drive.

Your AV software may be blocking the drive. I've seen this before where it stops USB devices from being accessed - although that is in a corporate environment...
