Default Locking wheel nuts - Shit I am boned.

Just managed to snap part of my locking wheel nut key. Shit.

What are my options. Was planning on doing the brakes this weekend too. Took the wheel off to identify caliper make and the cunt got snapped tightening the wheel back up.

I see there are universal tools for well over £100 quid but as I am not a mechanic I aint forking out that .
Would a garage whip em off for me if I get 4 regular nuts and replace em ?? Dont even need locking wheel nuts as noone would steal these alloys. Trust me.

I have a long serial number that was on the box with they lock key but I bet Honda would charge some obscene amount to replace.

Any other ideas I may have missed ???

Looks similar to these : download.jpg

    Thank for any tips.

A garage would surely take them off for you mate. You can get a removal socket set from eBay for £11, 1/2" drive. Black as in impact sockets, or hammer it and use a breaker bar. Even if you wanted to replace the locking nuts with more locking nuts (I know you said normal ones) a set can be bought for £10 to £15. Shame it's not a Nissan as I have a brand new set from my last job. I wasn't a mechanic BTW.
No sympathy for the devil; keep that in mind. Buy the ticket, take the ride...

As mentioned above, there are special tools for the job, but sometimes they may leave marks on the alloy.

PM sent with a pikey method.

I tried the oversized nut and smash it on technique, ruined my allow. Paid a garage £20 a corner to get them off. Cunty things

Trouble is the bit you can get on oversized nut on (or anything else) is completely spherical (see above). So nothing to grip. Overcarls Pikey method is looking increasingly likely.

I had a similar problem with my Astra locking nuts. In the end I took it to the Vauxhall garage and they removed them for me. Cost me £20. I had bought another locking key from eBay at £12 but this snapped also on first go.

when you get tyres changed or punctures done make sure they tighten the locking nut with a torque wrench.

DO NOT LET THEM USE THE DRILL

As this tightens them up tooo much

Good advice from Mickey. Never let a garage use a pneumatic torque gun to tighten the nuts. The torque guns many mechanics/tyre fitters have these days are much too powerful. The one I have has a force of 825 lb/ft. Not good if used by an inexperienced tyre fitter or one that wants to save time and doesn't give a fuck whether you will be able to get the wheel off in the event of a roadside puncture. I have seen someone break a good quality torque bar trying. Torque guns should never be used for tightening locking wheel nuts anyway. They only need nipping up with a standard wheel brace. Even with a standard wheel brace people have a habit of over tightening wheel nuts. Understandable I suppose because the last thing you want is a wheel coming off. (">

I've used an air gun loads of times without problem, but I didn't use a big one so it wouldn't get stupidly over torqued, and always spin the first few threads in by hand so it doesn't get cross threaded.

Just buy a new key from the manufacturer, did it with my Vectra once. Went to the dealer and paid for a new one cost about £15 I think.

I never use air tools to tighten nuts I don't have them available) but I would only ever do it this way anyway. use torque wrench on the 4 normal nuts and either drop the torque wrench about 5nm or hand tighten the locking nut no stomping on the thing. it doesn't need to be that tight mainly just a deterrent to thieves really.

never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups!

Seeing as this seems to be the "locking nut thread", one more tip, always remove the locking nut before the other nuts, and refitt it after the other bolts.

Reason being locking nuts are harder to damage, so best to let the remainder take up the majority of the force.
