as an iPad owner it might interest you that Lightroom for IOS now supports editing of raw files on the tablet.. use the camera connection kit to import from the SD card
I've played with it and it's cool..again Youtube has reviews of it in action.

Youtube is a mine of information pal, and if you supplement it with lots of book reading you can't really go wrong.

Of course you should get the shot right in the first place, to minimize any Photoshop editing, but in reality how many of us do that with every shot? Especially beginners.

Yeah, of course it is, I didn't mean to discredit it, I just wanted to discourage anyone from just bouncing between watching tutorials on 'how to do this cool effect'

The photography 'market' on youtube is so heavily weighted on gear and people trying to push their opinion on viewers in order to gain followers and therefor cash, it can be a bit of a minefield.

And of course beginners may have a lower hit rate on well composed images, but aside from cropping an image better, I personally don't think photoshop can save a bad image.

I'm going to see what I can learn by just dabbling and then googling or posting when I get stuck. I have installed both PS and LR trials and to be honest even though I haven't used it more than a couple of hours in the past for very basic stuff, PS felt a bit more familiar and I was able to manipulate images more successfully without wondering why something was or wasn't happening. Is the CC subscription the way to go with that or is there any cheap way of buying it outright?

Interesting you mention LR for iOS though, has it come a long way ? Sadly I have all but ditched my iPad pro which will be up for sale at some point alongside my Macbook and am now using a Lenovo Yoga Pro 900 for my all-in-one computing needs, so it'll be full desktop software for me I think.

I love lightroom and use it all for my photo stuff. I tried photoshop but having never had proper lessons in it i just can't get me head around it.

As regards to tutorials, i'm with 909, trial and error and a good book. The best book on photography i've read is called 'Understanding exposure.' by Bryan Pieterson

    An essential read.

I've seen this book too and it is good, along with another one on composition...forgot the name but it had composition in the title and was blue and yellow....I think.

Rather than create a new thread for all my dirty n00bness I'll keep my dumb questions in here.

I'm looking for a longer lens than my 55-200.

I used to love taking shots of the moon. I have many from my old Fuji bridge camera, one of which is here.... http://digital-forums.com/showthread...irst-moon-shot

Anyway, that thing had an insane zoom, which I think equates to 720mm in old money. I've done a ton of reading in the last few days and spun myself around in circles.

Now, I know I'm not going to get anywhere near a 700mm zoom with an interchangeable lens without needing to hide the receipt from the missus so what is the best way of getting anywhere close to it ?

I have seen a number of 70-300 EF fit lenses about from the likes of tamron and canon themselves (with image stabilization) which at the long end will give me 480mm equivalent - obviously still a way off 700mm but am wondering how these fare with the teleconverters I've seen available ? These lenses can be had for about £200 or less second hand - well within acceptable mrs parameters ;-)

I have also seen a cosina (vivitar) 100-400mm lens this doesn't have any image stabilization but would get me a bit closer to my previous capability at 640mm. I know this is a much cheaper lens and would need a tripod at the long end but is it viable ? I can get one of these locally for £130

So, what are my options to go 'long' on a budget ? Which is my best path?

I've read a lot that says get better glass and crop the shit out of it because the detail will be there and then I've seen some dazzling pictures taken with the cheaper 400mm lenses also.

    Thanks for any help

Check out Opteka lenses on Fleabay as they do one for the M3.. I have a 650/1300 for my canons and it performs very respectably for moon shots

Well a fool and his money and all that, I've just splashed out on a Tamron 70 SP AF 70-300 F/4-5.6 Di VC USD

£100 less than the equivalent canon lens and comes with a hood which none of the canon's do. I paid £229 new in a local specialist camera shop and spent a good hour trying a few of the options I was considering including a cheapo 100-400 and a few others. Very impressed with it so far. AF seems really fast and I am much faster with MF than I am with any of my canon lenses - not sure why. VC seems to work well. I'm around the coastline of cornwall next week so I can give it a decent workout.

Tried it with a secondhand 2x teleconverter which they had in the store but it turned out to be faulty, the camera didn't know there was a lens attached at all and wouldn't take an image even in full manual mode.

I'm away for a week now (partially the reason for the rushed purchase) but I think I'll try one of the Kenko teleconverters from amazon that run around £90 and have a play with full manual on a tripod.

    cheers,

    malty

some cheap teleconverters are just spacers between your lens and camera and as such will not operate the AF and so on. This wouldn't be an issue for astronomy are you would focus to infinity anyway but the camera needs to be set to 'shoot without lens' in the options, otherwise you get the problem you mentioned.

The one I tried had all the contacts to transmit signals through from camera to lens it just didn't want to work. The image itself I could see in the viewfinder was very promising and this particular one had 2x optics which would have made my lens a 600mm one at the expense of 2 f-stops so I was hoping it would work. I had no idea there was a shoot without lens option it's not something I've noticed so far so will have to have a hunt around the menus.

This is the one I think I'm going to try

I would only use a teleconverter if I had say a 300mm f2.8. If your using something like a f5.6 your either going to sacrifice shutter speed or iso.
    hasta la yeah baby yeah!

Yea that vid sort of re-enforces stuff I had already read so thanks. I have had a bit of a find today in a cash generator type place. A sigma 2.0 teleconverter for £24.99 and since the last one I've seen sold at £50 on eBay I thought it worth a punt. Haven't had a go with it yet but it's better than dropping £90 on it to find it won't do what I want. If it's not effective I will just push it on.

    Cheers

For moonshots it's not going to be a problem as it will be a timed exposure on a tripod but for anything else i've found I never use mine because of the loss of stops .. my Sigma 300 gives very respectable magnification so I reckon you will be very happy with your Tamron, both very well respected glass.. most of my other lenses are canon L glass and give great results

Gave it a very brief try on a walk around in Plymouth today. Results, it works and it auto focuses too - obviously because there was plenty of light. The subject is definitely closer but as expected less detail, bearing in mind both shots were handheld so relying on the lens' image stabilisation there should be better results on a tripod.

Sadly I can't upload anything bigger because I'm in the back of beyond and Internet is one bar of 3G tethered to an iPad !

Both shots were at maximum zoom on the tamron lens, one without the teleconverter and one with.

Just back from a week exploring some of Cornwall again and have learned loads mostly by experimentation.

Most used lenses are my 10-18mm IS STM EF-S and my new Tamron 70-300 VC USD which I adore playing with, with the odd few walkaround pics using the kit 18-55mm lens. Have hardly used the second longer lens I got with the camera (50-200 ef-m is stm) so I think I may well sell that on as it seems a bit pointless as it only fills a gap between 55 and 70 and for anything above that I would always select the Tamron as it feels so natural to use.

A nice and mostly unexpected side effect is I think the missus has caught the bug a bit too, more than happy to take a few pics and experiment when I was off playing in the sea with our 2 year old.

I do think I might take a look at getting a proper macro lens at some point but more than happy with the selection I have at the moment.

Very happy with the camera also, nothing really annoys me apart from I keep pressing the menu button by mistake when using the viewfinder. The camera features are great especially the wifi sharing, meaning I can move a pic straight to my phone for email or facebook or whatever. Wouldn't want to be without that feature now. I also am delighted that I got the viewfinder (it's an option) as I use that 99% of the time and not the lcd display, which isn't very clear in bright sunlight.

    cheers,

    malty

picked up an old f1.8 50mm FD fit lens and an eos-m to FD adaptor, total outlay £30 and I love it. It has to be used on full manual mode but I don't mind that and it's retro look fits the mirrorless chassis very well.

I have got a few nice handheld moon shots the last couple of nights which I'm pleased with. With my tamron 300mm and the 2x extender and even managed to get it to autofocus.

Are there any decent free image hosting sites at the moment ? I used to use imageshack but I logged in and it's apparently expired and was asking me to go premium ??
