The sun is really hot there, use boot polish rather than sunscreen for maximum protection.

Actually, wearing shoe polish on the face is not unheard of. Not for sun protection though. (">

Don't go alone. Watch out for cab drivers - especially outside hotels and airports.
You will see lots of people dressed head to toe in white pretending to be a cab driver. Make sure they are before you get in.
You WILL get harassed at markets - don't take it personally. Jamaica is a very poor country and everyone wants you to spend money with them. Don't feel pressurised.
DONT buy the coloured friendship style bracelets everyone sells - this is a mark for dumb tourists and the locals will play on it and you will get harassed more.
Barter - If you are given a price for something halve it - chances are they will take it as they marked it up so much to start with even paying half they are making HUGE profits.
Go to Appleton Rum Distillery and get wankered on the overproof rum at the end
Go to Dunnes River Falls and get a photo of you and your significant other under the waterfalls - it's both peaceful and beautiful.
Take a swamp ride and spot the alligators but don't get too close
Everyone/everywhere in Jamaica claims some connection to Bob Marley but most of it isn't true. Be wary and speak to your hotel concierge if you are unsure.

All that said the majority of people are VERY friendly. I went out on my own a few times around Montego Bay where I was staying and other than meeting a drug dealer called Tony who had all gold teeth trying to befriend me but eventually pulling a knife on me if I didn't get in the car with him (I didn't in the end thanks to a very friendly security guard who had just got off duty) I had a pleasant time.

Most hotels have everything you need and can organise outings - take the offers here as they know the score and you will stay safe(r).

One last thing : Most hotels have safes. Keep your passports/driving licenses and stuff there. You will not need them when on the island and they are highly sought after by the locals..

I loved my time out there and will go back at some point hopefully. The weather is amazing, the people are friendly and the water is just SO clear you will not believe it.

    Have a great time.

Ah yes - Ocho Rios or something. Well worth the trip. It really is a beautiful island although you need to be prepared as there is a lot of poverty. I drove from the south of the island back to the north one evening and some of the little "towns" are nothing more than corrugated iron huts with families living in space smaller than the back of my transit van and a fire to keep them warm.

Went on an all inclusive to Jamaica years ago, cant remember where I stayed. Beautiful place, did some sea fishing out there and loved it. As EvilBoB said, don't go out alone, get to know your hotel staff and they will point you in the right direction. When you travel round the island you will see how poor it is. By far the worst thing out there is the American tourists, Jamaica is like Blackpool to them. They woop and high five everything and shag in the Jacuzzi's... You better like Red Stripe and Wray Nephew and seriously strong herb!

One thing I found is that the all-inclusive I stayed at (Jack Tar Village) said on their brochure that the "all inclusive" was local drinks only ie. Made in Jamaica however they had everything when we got there. Jose Cuervo, Smirnoff, JD. Never charged a penny and they were LARGE measures... Can't remember a lot of the second week haha

Hope you're enjoying yourself out there. Post some pics
