Info The 'British Dream' is alive and well.

I came across this article on reddit. The main topic is regarding the US, but I thought it highlighted a good reason why we have a Tory government and why the working class continually vote against their own economic interests.

    http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank...-of-the-world/

Clearly we have our own version of the 'American Dream' fallacy. It appears we're just as gullible as the Yanks when it comes to being conned into believing that if we work hard we will do well, and success is completely within our control.

It does, but not everything you read is true. The wiki article in my eyes is a little outdated.

I think this began under Blair, and certainly continued under Cameron - the "We're all middle class" fallacy.

Funnily enough I asked a bloke at work yesterday what class he saw himself in. Middle was his reply. So I asked him if he lost his job tomorrow, how long could he support himself?

    His answer was fairly obvious.

I think the notion that 'if you work hard, you too can be successful', has been around a lot longer. But it really came to the fore after Thatcher came to power and the politics of greed really took hold. It's interesting, that like the US, we now seem to value individualistic behaviour, as a nation, over more collective behaviour. Which is a sad state of affairs given that Britain was one of the first countries to foster socialist ideals back in the 19th century.

In relation to the term 'middle class', the reason so many want to identify with that term is because of the decades of demonisation of the working or 'lower' classes by politicians and especially the media. Even the left wing tabloids are guilty of demonising the poor, just to sell newspapers.

Oh ok, Its now ok to quote from wiki? last time I did you gave me this jem!

"As for knowing something about history, you've copied most of that verbatim from Wikipedia. I am not surprised, but I am surprised that's your choice of source for information. It's founding and existence are the very antithesis of the political, economic and social ideals you clearly hold dear. If the world thought like you Wikipedia might still exist, but it would be £5 per article and only available to those with a UK IP address.

This has been a great scam convincing dead brained morons with delusions of grandeur they are middle class when they are working class, divide and conquer and in recent years trying to introduce false classes to try and divide the working class even more, middle class is an aspiration a carrot if you like for working class people used to get them to vote for right wing parties and live to work rather than work to live when in reality less than 10% of the UK population is middle class.

I am not a royalist or anti royalist I accept both sides of the argument but one thing I hate with a passion and became very clear to me how fucked up it is when I lived in Australia is the class system in the UK, in Australia all kids play golf, rugby, footie, rich and poor adults play golf go to whatever clubs they want, can join any clubs they want regardless of schools they went to or who their parents are yet here we spend our time judging people and pretending to be better than people we are the same as because of something created to keep the working class man a content drone.

I doubt anyone is middle class on this forum but as long as the working class keep climbing the greasy pole pushing each other down the rich and powerful have won and the divide between rich and poor with continue to widen and they will continue to laugh at how they get the working class to turn on each other.

Firstly, I didn't quote from Wikipedia, I posted a link to it as it's as good an explanation of what the term 'working class' means as any other. Secondly, I have never claimed Wikipedia is a poor source of information, quite the opposite. Thirdly, I pulled you up on it, as you claimed to have some knowledge of a subject when you didn't. And to back up your claims, instead of writing your own words, you lazily copied and pasted from Wikipedia, verbatim, and didn't even credit your source and passed it off as your own.

    Now that's priceless.

Divide and rule, it has been happening forever but this country is better at it than most. We had a lot to practice it on...The Empire.
