New Virgin BB 100mb-Wi-Fi

I had new Virgin 100mb broadband installed this morning. A speedtest confirmed I was only getting 48mb via Wi-Fi to my PC. I called the engineer who told me to connect via ethernet which I did and got 104mb. Although I'm pleased with the speed now it looks like I'll need to spend a morning stapling an ethernet cable around the skirting.

I'm pretty disappointed I was only getting 48mb via Wi-Fi and I'm only about 12 feet away from the router with no walls in between. The engineer suggested it may be my Wi-Fi card in my PC. Is he correct?

If you have a Wifi card that is 108mbps the reality is that you will not get that throughput - it's a maximum unlike ethernet which "should" be close to the mark.

If you are saying your card is connecting at 48mbps I would check the router settings and makes ure 802.11 n or ac or whatever is enabled and that that is what you are connecting to. It sounds to me like you may be connecting at 802.11g which will only connect up to 56mbps if i remember correctly. So check for 5ghz spectrum in the config and enable it if it's not - also check your pc wifi has this enabled

I'd just go with the Ethernet - guaranteed reliability, Wifi is for mobile devices and easily affected by all sorts of stupid shit broadcasting around not to mention walls etc.

802.11b - 2-3 Mbps downstream, up to 5-6 Mbps with some vendor-specific extensions.
802.11g - ~20 Mbps downstream
802.11n - 40-50 Mbps typical, varying greatly depending on configuration, whether it is mixed or N-only network, the number of bonded channels, etc. Specifying a channel, and using 40MHz channels can help achieve 70-80Mbps with some newer routers. Up to 100 Mbps achievable with more expensive commercial equipment with 8x8 arrays, gigabit ports, etc.
802.11ac - 70-100+ Mbps typical, higher speeds (200+ Mbps) possible over short distances without many obstacles, with newer generation 802.11ac routers, and client adapters capable of multiple streams.

I would agree with Mickey's post on the actual speeds. To be honest though I've never had any problems using WiFi with BT kit. TalkTalk's equipment is pretty shoddy though from my experiences - as is Sky.

Just come off the virgin box with a cable to your pc. fastest and best way to get max speed

If you do want to have decent wifi then get a router that is ac compatible I have one and just got this result using my iPad

The problem isn't the router or any setting. The superhub 3 is wireless AC but you are limited to whatever you are connecting to it which sounds like wireless N.

This laptop I'm on now is only N.

something else I've noticed 200mb line super hub 3, if I have the router set to hub only downloads max out, if its set to router with wifi turned on it almost halfs the download speed to wired connections as though its reserving for wifi so they dont feel the pinch while im leeching.

It's the most shocking piece of shit router I've ever encountered.

1: You can't set your IP range to anything other than 192.168.0.X (you can by using a wire shark to grab your auth token, a hex calc to work out your ip range and by using some special links). This pissed me off no end as my IP range is 192.168.43.X and most my kit is non DHCP. I'll get a post up as this might help someone else
2: It's slow as shit, it takes 30 seconds just to get the flashing cursor so I can add my password.
3: Password is unmasked when logging in.
4: After adding password it then takes around 1-2 minutes to actually login.
5: No option for using punctuation in password, uppercase, lowercase and numbers only!
6: No view of UPNP table
7: WPS cannot be turned off
8: Modem only mode drops for 2-3 seconds every 35 minutes meaning I can't use Pfsense.

fuckers dont support my apple tv either for streaming from phones, eldest sick of watching catch up on her phone so though ah hook up apple tv 3 and airplay to tv.
all connects soon as you hit airplay .... fuck all apparently a known issue firmware due out to sort it

I get great speed from the wifi (just ran Speedtest and it hit 198Mbs on iPhone), but it looses connection every 2 days. Needs to be unplugged to reset. Have spoken to technical support who say I need to pay 50 quid for a new one as it's not showing as faulty at their end. Idiot I spoke to last time reset it-now I. Need to re apply static ips and port forwarding. Just wish they would stop showing off about download and produce more solid kit with faster upload-12 meg rubbish for couple of plex streams

My Superhub 1 kept randomly rebooting, might have been daily could have been 3 times in an hour. After eventually getting pissed off by this phoned them to end up with a clown in a call centre who was "sending strong signals which would guaranteed fix it". Needless to say rebooted 20 minutes later. Next phone call got a Scottish chap who said no problem and just sent a new Superhub 3 out.
