Cool as a cucumber. And this is an old card, with a inferior manufacturing process etc...

I don't want to get in a fan boy war, but it's always best to stick to facts.

    Nvidea cards will be -
    Faster
    Cooler
    More expensive

    AMD cards will be
    Cheaper
    Cost effective (£ per fps)
    Warmer

Driver issues will be had from either manufacturer - touch wood never had a problem with any drivers from either manufacturer, and I've used both.

As for lack of Sli/Cross fire - I'm not sure this is much of an issue. If you wanted to run 2x 1060's why not get a 1070 or 1080?
That's your experience and that's absolutely fair enough. Please don't call me a fanboy though. I'm too old to care about that kind of bullshit. (not that I ever was). I have no brand loyalty to anything let alone a sodding graphics card.

For me, the fans always seemed to run a lot harder to try and keep the same temps. That's just my experience. If other people's experience varies then fair enough.

I also had a lot of driver issues with AMD. I was always getting your driver has stopped responding but has recovered messages. As soon as I switched to nvidia I haven't had one since. Again, that's just my experience and if other's varies then fair enough.

    Any pointers for this guys?
Details as they have been offered -

    R9 280x = £80
    R9 290 = £100
    R9 380 2GB = £120
    R9 380 4GB = £150
    GTX 970 = £150

Like a mine field this shit. Looked up most and all seem pretty close. I know the 4GB R9 380 is probably the top, but compared the GTX 970?
Checking on eBay, prices can seriously vary on 'X', 'TI' or Reference versions.
Which would you go with and why?
I think the 380 is closer to the bottom of that list. If you ignore the 'R9' in the name of the card, the first digit in the number, from left to right, represents the series, i.e., 2=second series & so on. The second digit denotes the class of the GPU. The higher the better. A card with an 'x' in its name is better than one without. Amongst the AMD cards, the R9 290 is the star of the show by a country mile. I'd say the GTX 970 is marginally quicker. Fifty quid better?

It might be worth checking the R9 290 isn't based on the AMD reference design (single fan).

So your saying a Series 2 Class 9 could be better than a Series 3 Class 8?

The Series 3 is just a newer card?

I have just been offered a Sapphire AMD R9 380 4GB Card for £110 tracked delivery included. 3 months old. Sounds like a bargain to me?

    Yes.

When the R9 290 (290x) was released it was a top tier card. The 380, like its predecessor (280), is a mid range card. Even though the 380 is a newer card, it is long way off the 290. Have you looked at the anandtech benchmarks?

Annoying! I've got an offer for a R9 290 for £100 or a R9 380 for £100 and I'm now swaying towards the 290 for performance wise. The clever buy would be the R9 390 as its only 3 months old and not warranty registered yet!
    Dam! This is difficult.

Did you mean the R9 380 or 390?

My knowledge of consumer rights is very limited. Is there a time limit set by the manufacturer on registering the card? Is the warranty transferable - I imagine you will be still classed as a secondary owner (third party) even though it would be registered in your name - & would you then have to pay shipping costs?

Ok. Let's narrow this down a bit

I've got the option now (spending a bit more due to tax refund! Whoop!).

    XFX R9 390x 8GB - £180ish (not offered yet).
    MSI Armour x2 OC GTX 970 4GB - £150.

The XFX a better card RAM wise, Even though the GTX 970 out performs according to PassMark?

    http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html

Which is the smarter choice? It's gotta be out of these 2 I think.

Passmark is a synthetic tool. The best way of comparing cards is to see how they perform with real games like Doom, Crysis... I've owned an XFX card (7870) in the past and didn't have any problems with it. XFX doesn't have the best reputation though & if it is second hand I would definitely check out the warranty. It's probably 15-25% quicker than the R9 290 (& GTX 970 - depending on whether the benchmark game favours AMD or Nvidia).

The 1060 is either on par or better than the 390x & can be had for £179 from ebuyer. The risk involved in buying the R9 290 makes sense, but the 390x doesn't. Likewise with the GTX 970, when Currys are selling it on ebay for £174.

Pulled the trigger on a XFX R9 390X 8GB for £180 +Special delivery. Should be here Tuesday.
I figure I've always had AMD, so why change it. NVidia are potentially the better cards, but for the price, I though it was a reasonably good deal.
