Help Which laptop for gaming ?

Treating my lad this xmas and i know he wants a mid range gaming laptop.
I fully understand a desktop is better but he wants.....what he wants !

    My budget is £750 TOPS.

I am thinking top end core i5...8-16g of ram and that's about all i know on gaming laptops.

He is using a core-i3 with on board at the mo so his games are not that graphics hungry but that's because the laptop is shite.

Any help here is much appreciated

I know you said TOPS but recently got one of these for a customer :

    https://www.cclonline.com/product/218451/9S7-179553-826/Laptops/MSI-GP72-6QE-Leopard-Pro-17-3-inch-Full-HD-Gaming-Laptop-Intel-Core-i7-6700HQ-8GB-RAM-128GB-SSD-1TB-HDD-GeForce-GTX-950M-Windows-10-Home-2-Year-Warranty/NOT03337/

ONLY £30 MORE AND WORTH IT !!!!

Also it's Nvidea not AMD so more power and less overheating to worry about ... Big plus in a laptop.

    Thanks to piggzy

The laptop piggzy has recommended is £750 at scan and there are a couple of larger models for sub-£700 too. I don't know enough about gaming specs but it would be a good idea to have a chat with him about which games he is looking forward to and then check the required specs.
    https://www.scan.co.uk/shop/computer...gaming-laptops

Edit: I think the one I found is a slightly different sub-model without SSD. I would pay the extra for the SSD, 128GB seems a bit small but if it's set up properly so OS/installs are on the SSD and data on the HDD you should be ok but worth considering in case he has a lot of large installs.

    Thanks to evilsatan

For the past few years I've used a asus republic of gamers g750m laptop. Can't fault the ROG range from asus.

Looking to upgrade myself and need something with a bit more grunt for the newer games coming out

It might be worth noting that the 950m is about 30-40% slower than its desktop equivalent (GTX 950) when looking @ the minimum specs for games. I'd also be tempted to wait to see if the 1050m laptops hit the shelves before x-mas -the performance should be close to the GTX 1050. Both the 950m & 1050m are entry level, so should be about the same price.

Has your son considered a SFF PC? For the same money he could have a GTX 1060 Mini-ITX based system with a 17" USB monitor (& 24" 1080p Monitor) that is portable and 3 times quicker than the 950m laptop.

Tbh he is pushed for space and moves from mine to his mums and my parents for weekends etc and his own bedroom doesn’t have the room so it’s got to be a laptop.

He’s done amazing at school this year and I am treating him to a laptop. He has no idea but I am keen to get the right machine.

Of them all the MSI seems best bang for buck.

My last two gaming laptops have been MSI and they both ran pretty much anything. My current one is 4 years old and Runs modern games OK on lower settings, build quality is not the best mind. I will be buying a new one in the spring and it's likely going to be MSI again, possibly ROG.

A few people have had MSI and all say the same. Works well but sometimes build quality isn't amazing.

Whether you're into Street Fighter V or Fallout 4, you're going to need a souped-up rig to handle the onslaught. But which laptop to get? Do you go for extreme portability, face-melting power or that ever-elusive best-of-both-worlds machine? You'll find your dream machine in our list of top picks, based on Laptop Mag's extensive testing.

Speaking of US, I am working in Texas for a while. Looking around I can get an MSI GP62MVR LEOPARD PRO for £200 less than in the UK, and it has twice the RAM and twice the size SSD of the UK model. The MSI warranty is international, are there any downsides I am missing?
